Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but can you trade a player who has filed for arbitration?

23 scheduled arbitration cases this summer. 1 went to arbitration, 2 are pending, 20 settled before arbitration. I like that holdouts are a rarity these days.

That's a good question. The CBA doesn't appear to cover this, so I'd say the answer is yes.

Had Russell filed before being traded to the Flames, or were things simply heading in that direction?

^ Imo, I think it was heading that direction and the Blues decided that getting a pick for him would be better than nothing, it also helped that they already had enough quality defenseman before Russell.

And now only Subban remains. I wonder if an extension can be negotiated or if this will be settled by the arbiter?

IMO what makes the Subban dilemma even more hilarious is that last time he held out for his 2 year bridge contract, rumours were that he wanted to sign around a 7-8 year deal at a 6mil+ cap hit. Habs fans at the time were even chiming in about how happy they were that their GM didn't buckle at his demands. Boy would that deal look stellar right now.

Montreal has a "lucrative" 8 year deal on the table. Wonder what the AAV is? And if Subban will take it?

I'll predict he signs and it ends up being $8.25m AAV for 8 years

Just going off memory but I'm pretty sure the Blues signed him and then traded him. This was done to avoid arbitration. Otherwise we could have just claimed him off waivers.

True but I think Habs fans are more than happy that subban has earned a big pay day with his performance over the last two seasons. Just like we flames fans will be more than happy if backlund and Brodie continue their stellar development and earn big paydays next year.

I think Montreal fans would be more frustrated that management hasn't payed up for subban at this point. That was supposed to be the whole idea of the bridge contract... Subban proves his value over the two years and Montreal would pony up the dough when the time came. I can understand having reservations about a player I guess but subban's camp has to think he's done pretty much all they've asked him to in the bridge deal.

Actually, they qualified Russell, but waived him as they didn't think he could make their team last year. We traded for him after he went unclaimed and signed him to a contract ourselves.

Close but no.

Blues qualified him
Blues waived him
He went unclaimed
Flames/Blues agreed upon a trade
Blues signed him
Trade went through

Feaster talked about this, said that the Blues signed him because the Flames did not want to acquire a player with arbitration rights.
