I like that they're not just going to give him a contract based on the past. Let's see what he does this year and go from there. If he gets injured and misses a bunch of games, maybe they don't offer him a contract. Maybe Glencross plays amazing all year and they give him a contract. I just think it's a great idea to wait and see.

That's a relief. Signing him to an extension before the season starts wouldn't be very smart. What if young players like Granlund, Sven and Gaudreau play their way on the team? There would be no room for Glencross next season.

I don't mind them giving him 2 or 3 years at fair value as long as it contains no NTC/NMC, then we can flip him for some assets. I can't see it though, he is going to want the whole kit and kabutal, term, salary, and a NTC for sure so we are probably better off hoping he comes out of the gate flying and we can deal him for something.

Great guy off the ice but the ntc would handicap the team, nice spelling of kabutal by the way. Never seen it tried before

Then we'd trade him or send him to the minors in that situation.

Scoring Winger

I haven't been a Glencross fan since we became basement dwellers. I'm more excited about young guys playing well. The way I see it, we've got a glut of left wingers already, many of whom are on the cusp of playing full time in the NHL. So I don't really think it's wise to sign him for anything longer than 1-2 years.
And Treliving should definitely see how he plays this season before offering him anything

The big question for me is will the guy waive his no trade clause at the deadline to play for a chance at the Stanley Cup or will he spite the Flames and refuse a trade because they won't pony up for him to stay where he wants?
I don't mind re-signing him at the same dollar value, but anything over and i'd rather trade him for a young asset. He's just way too inconsistent and is only effective when he plays physical, yet can't do that because he's too brittle.

If he demands a full NMC, trading him or sending him to the minors might not be an option.
I would trade him at the deadline or sooner and give the spot to a deserving young player.

I think if you make it clear that you are not bringing him back then he will waive to go to a contender, what would be the advantage of staying? I can't see him saying no just to spite the team because it doesn't seem in his character and two can play at that game. He refuses to waive just to spite the team you simply either give him 4th line minutes for the rest of the year or healthy scratch him and give the minutes to guys in the Flames plans going ahead which would hurt his numbers and therefore his ability to negotiate a better deal come UFA. He would most certainly waive.

Worst case scenario, we can always trade him to Edmonton if he wants to stay in Alberta.

That's not enough, they need to give Hall, a 1st, and Nurse.

He wouldn't be the first guy to not waive. There is precedent. Families and life outside of hockey also come into the mix.
I've always thought that Glencross loves being an Albertan more than playing hockey. Not that there's anything wrong with that but from an asset management standpoint, I hope the Flames can get something good for him.

It's like you and they seem to think this is wayyy more important than the counting stats, which is bull####!

I don't know a thing about advanced stats. I know he's a frustrating player to watch, and the quote I bolded is in line with what I see when he plays.
By the way, your line about shooting percentage/goals is an incorrect assumption. Ovie always has low shooting percentages but he takes a TON of shots. A high shooting percentage usually means a guy is extremely skilled, or had a lucky season and is about to come back down to earth.
And as long as you've got a Leafs avatar no one cares what annoys you.

Scores goals but can be a liability in other ways. My hope would be a young player replaces his offensive production in the next couple years while having a solid all-around game.

I think you're going to get that from a lot of players. Every player in that 2/3rd line role will bring something to the team and at the same time have deficiencies in their games. A good team is built of players with different and complementing skill sets. I think Glencross brings a couple of different elements to the Flames that are important. I also think you're hoping for a lot from the young players coming up in the Flames system. These young fringe 2/3rd liners are all going to have deficiencies in their game as well, even after they develop. Overall, I think Glencross brings more than he takes away from this team and is a bargain at his contract. I'd be in favour of extending him minus the NMC/NTC clause at a reasonable price. EDIT: Of course assuming he continues to play well this season and stay healthy after last season's health problems.
