I guess for Coyotes they only hold a three day event with no scrimmages (i.e. Fan960 coverage).
Don't be shocked if the Flames make the same change next year.

I hope the Flames don't go too far in patterning themselves against the wildly successful Coyotes franchise

I actually like the fact that development camp is being used for more development off of the ice.
Teaching them how to train off the ice, how to eat healthy, etc will be more valuable than 5 days of icetime IMO.
These guys know how to play hockey, it is usually outside of the rink that they need more help with their development.

Bennett looked like he was sticking in there physicaly with Kanzig. If he dedicated his off-season like Monahan did he could make this team next year.

I like the scrimmages because it gives us a better look at invitees and for them it is a tryout.

I prefer the on-ice development camp format because I want to watch Flames prospects play hockey.
I like hockey.

I know the drills and scrimmages aren't the best indicator but I don't think Bennett is ready, whereas Gaureau I think is. Gaudreau and Klimchuk were good measuring sticks in this camp for Bennett (as both have higher ceilings), and I think both were better than Bennett through the sample size we got. That's no slight on Bennett, it's merely his first camp and by the scouts it sounded like he was the least NHL ready of the top 4. We'll see in the fall but I'm not sure he even gets 9 games with the competition there that'll be on the fringe to make it.

Treliving said, in the video interview from Flames TV, that this should be all about preparation and training. That players prepping themselves to look good and make an impression in this camp are not spending that time as productively as they could be. It's not about July - it's about September (major paraphrase by me).

These camps do have the downside of sending some of the fanbases rookie expectations through the roof. I wonder if that bothers Burke who seems to want to do the complete opposite? Is that why Treliving is thinking of changing the format?
Lots of questions:
Does the camp help the players?
Even if they say it does, does that mean it helps?
Does the comraderie of future teammates gained, important?
Is the fan excitement good? Good for the franchise, maybe not for the players?
|
Treliving said he wasn't thinking of radically changing things so I doubt they scratch the whole on ice thing. I think they just tone it down and eliminate the scrimmages to avoid unnecessary injuries for next year. It's the practices more then the scrimmages that helps them develop I would imagine

I think the on-ice sessions are greatly underrated. It gives all the prospects an idea of how far the depth chart they currently are. If they go to camp getting out-performed by walk-ons, then it's time to either step up the training or accept that getting a degree is the best course of action.
Helps a little to build chemistry for the future and I'm sure these prospects get really excited seeing who they may be linemates with in the future. I'm sure Johnny was happy to see all the huge players with character around him who may save his ass one day.

I guess, standing wise the Coyotes have done "better" than the Flames over the last 5 years.
Flames until recently were hardly a role model in terms of developing players.....
Not to mention the Flames hired a former Coyote employee....

Oh no doubt the Flames can improve and Treliving will bring pieces he thought worked in Phoenix. I just expect him to draw from many successful organizations
Mostly though it was a tongue in cheek comment

In case you were confused by zambonis instead of Gaudreau, the time of his goal is actually at 10:39:09

You know it's off-season when you've been watching a zamboni circle the ice on an online stream for 2 minutes

I wouldn't say Bennett looked ready from what I saw in the scrimmages. I did think he looked like the most gifted talent there other than Gaudreau.
In the last scrimmage there was a glimpse of Bennett's tenacity and competitive drive when he single-handedly fought through 3 red team defencemen to generate a half-scoring chance. A semi-competitive scrimmage isn't the place where Sam Bennett wins a place on the team. He'll get a good long look in September when he can show everyone just how hard he works and how strong-willed he is. Kid plays for keeps.
For many reasons I believe it would serve the franchise and the player best if he went back to the OHL. I don't expect Bennett to make it an easy decision for anyone, though.
Klimchuk is an interesting case because I feel he's been largely out of the limelight until recently. I would fully expect him to tear up the WHL as a 19 year old. Depends on if his supporting cast improves this season, I guess.
I think we can look forward to both Bennett and Klimchuk at the World Juniors, regardless of how they do in September.
Gaudreau? He looked like he could be the shiftiest, most skillful Flames player I've seen since Theo. Must keep in mind that he was playing against kids out there, but I can't imagine a scenario where he's not up with the big club by Christmas.

I was going to post along these lines. Getting out on the ice does a lot of things. It does not have to be too competitive or intense, but it does allow for players to evaluate where they stand against their peers, and teach them what they have to be ready for come camp. Even Bennett said the speed was an adjustment. Now having gone through it it will be easier for him at rookie camp. Not to mention, seeing the coaching style, drills, and systems.
