His best performances in the World Championship came against Germany (4 pts), Belarus (3 pts) and Kazakhstan (2 pts). None of which are loaded with NHLers. In the preliminary round he was pointless against the Swiss, Russians, and Finns. He also added one assist in a 6-5 loss to the Latvians. Then in the quarter finals he was pointless against the Czechs when the US lost 4-3 and he played 21:43, more than any other US forward, and registered 3 shots.
While his tournament totals were impressive, his productivity against elite team's with higher level talent was non-existent.
I'm not saying this tarnishes anything about the kid's potential, nor am I saying he played badly in those pointless games. I'm just answering your initial question.

AHL or NHL. If you have the skill, play at the highest level. He will not be safe from the physicality or the rigors of a tough schedule in the Ahl. In fact, I would say it is far worse in the minors.
|
I can agree with that. I suppose my thinking is that they might be a bit more willing to shelter him throughout the season in the minors while attempting to address his weight. I understand that's not necessarily a guarantee however. It's still the immediate issue and there will be a level of concern in either league until he's added that physical resistance and strength.

Understandable and I would agree with you to certain extent but I was hearing from many posters watching the games that he was one of the better players on the ice. There were lots of chances where he'd pass the puck and they couldn't handle it because it was unexpected (Perfect passes by all accounts) and had his team been playing less poopty they would have done a lot better against the Czechs.
Also I believe Team USA was a pretty young and inexperienced team.
But I'm not going to be sad if JG starts in the A and plays onto the Flames. He will determine his own fate.

It was great to see the progression Kanzig has made compared to seeing him last year at prospect camp. his skating has improved and makes a lot better first pass coming out of the zone. There are times he looks like Regehr bit it's hard to judge in a camp like this where he clearly was suspending his mean streak.
now back to JG 24/7

It's interesting to hear the mixed reviews of Kanzig but at least he's competent and still developing I look forward to the future, I'm rooting for the guy, we'll see what he can do once he's allowed to use his body more, I don't expect him to be an offensive machine but if he can become a solid stay-at-home defender I'll be ecstatic because we don't really have that yet.
When does Gaudreau get put on the cover of an NHL game btw

It's been like that for Kanzig in both development camps now.
You have half of the group that think he can't skate, can't make a pass, and is terrible.
The other half of people say he looks strong, is surprisingly mobile for a big guy, and makes an okay first pass.
Just a weird take since it seems to be this way everyday.

I thought Kanzig played well. He is good in game situations. Anyone who says he is terrible is exaggerating. Anyone who says he is amazing is exaggerating.

Re. Kanzig
Almost seems like there is an anti-large bias with some. Almost.
There is definitely an anti-small bias with others.
I don't get to see any of it first hand, so like anything else, I try to learn which posters I can trust and which posters take a grain of salt. It's all just fan opinions anyway.
Go Flames Go.

IIRC, Baertschi was the best Flames player on the ice in his first NHL game. Adrenalin + talent will do that. But Burke and Co. have given every indication that they think Baertschi was rushed. They've also dropped all sorts of hints that Gaudreau won't start the season in Calgary.

I think I'd rather have Johnny getting 1st line AHL minutes and getting used to the schedule as well. We all turned our heads to Baertschi when Iggy left, I want us to make sure we don't do the same to Johnny.

Yes, because they would have decided that months prior to training camp and their comments on Gaudreau have nothing to do with merely tempering expectations, but are actually hints that it has been predetermined he will not be an NHL player. ####ing really?
Also Baertschi was not the best player in a Flames jersey in his first game (vs. Winnipeg) he didn't crack the scoreboard, in fact reviews were largely mixed if I recall correctly. He had a couple nice shifts but was far from the best player on the ice. JG was our best player against Vancouver, and almost instantly made guys around him better. Mind you, it was a meaningless game and the last game on the schedule, but he was easily the most dangerous player in our silks.
But yeah, I'm not sure you know what you're talking about, at all. Try again.

Sure... but given that this is a team which was in the recent past routinely right at the cap upper limit and is now the team with the lowest payroll in the NHL (with no change in ownership) I think it's pretty easy to say that icing the most competative team isn't what the Flames are trying to accomplish, not this year at any rate.
