Not sure if this belongs here but Tim Harrison won himself a mini-bike at last years Stampede. He one upped himself this year:

Kid apparently has horseshoes up his rear end.
Edit: This is his prize from last year:

Never in person. I'm sure he looked absolutely marvellous on the ice against other prospects. The kid is a magician with the puck, but this isn't something we didn't already know.
I'm very excited about the potential he brings, and him dangling around other prospects is great. That and his performance at the World Championships, these are all good things. But the same questions around his size haven't gone away. We have absolutely no inclination this will translate to the next level against much bigger, more physical players. While there are always questions about how prospects will transition to the NHL, he's simply another level of wildcard due to his minuscule stature.
Then we start throwing out "best prospect in Flames history"? With the likes of Niewendyk, MacInnis, Gilmour, Hull, Iginla, Suter, Roberts, Phaneuf etc, I just can't get behind that. I'm as hopeful as anyone he becomes a top 6 player with the Flames, and I do think he can do that, but it's absolute crazy talk IMO we're placing him above some of the Hall of Fame players that have played with the Flames.

Except that we do, actually... his one NHL game and Worlds tournament this year. Those were all against bigger, more physical professional players. It's a small sample size, but it's very much an inclination as not only did he not look out of place, but he was the best player on the ice for many of those games.

Why do you feel the need to do this? Using the word "we" like it pertains to the entire forum or fan base. Yes, a very select few might have said some outlandish things, but all in all, the excitement is warranted for the most part. There is just no need to make blanket statements like this. If anything's happening it's you reading one or two odd comments and letting them effect your overall read of the situation.

Well "we" have seen what a small sample size looked like for Sven as well. Wayyy too small to start drawing conclusions for Johnny. Reason for excitement, though? Absolutely.
I was addressing Stryker's observation, and there have been several others defending it since I called it out. That's why "we" was said.

Just wanted to post a few things i overheard Conny and the coaching staff talking about:
-Conny kept raving about Austin Carroll. Described numerous scouting trips to see him. Said that you should "never wake the bear".When he gets fired up, he dominates. When he hits guys, he kills them.
-All of them were talking about VanBrabant's shot, and how great it is, but Conny pointed out how he never hits the net. Conny said he was keeping track, and sure enough, Bryce missed the net quite often.
-They kept dissing Klimchuk for cheating in the drills, but said the coaches should be giving him crap for it.
-liked what he saw from Zejdl.
-They LOVE Bill Arnold. Kept expressing amazement about his skating. Hartley said Billy told him that he has lost 10 pounds.
-Conny said "teams always ask about Kanzig".
-Kept referring to Gaudreau as "my boy Johnny Hockey".
-Said that Brodie's contract status would become interesting. Said P.K. Subban will probably make 8.5M a year.
-sounds like they are talking to David Marcoux.

She worked with him alot when he was in the AHL as well, before she committed fully to the Leafs. Thats around the same time she was working with Brian Boyle.

This would be huge. Marcoux was a huge part of the reason Kipper was so good.

Didn't mean to nit pick, but Gilmour wasn't Flames' prospect...you don't have to get behind it, but do you have to damper on people's enthusiasm?

Just throwing this out there, but maybe the extra skating practice had something to do with him being gassed?!?
|
I am actually extremely high on Kanzig - I think he will be an NHL'er. There could be a variety of factors why he was gassed - already tired from his extra practice, poor sleep the night before, possibly flu-bug, etc., etc. There could be a variety of reasons. Every player has a bad outing, or is over-tired at times, and one showing doesn't really make a trend. He is probably the most dedicated prospect in terms of training in the entire org.
I was actually speculating that I think he may be too big (too much muscle mass) and I wonder if the Flames' new strength and conditioning coach will get him to trim down a bit from that regard. You don't see too many muscular behemoths in the NHL - though if he is playing 12-16 minutes a night at the NHL level he may very well maintain that level of build. I know Iginla decided years ago to reduce his muscle mass a bit in order to be quicker and have more stamina.
However, I don't think there is another poster on this board that is as high on him as I am (I actually think in time he could very well be a very good 2nd pairing shut-down D, but I would bet he at least becomes another Engelland, which is not bad at all for a third round pick).

Bring on tomorrow. This should be good.
We'll get to see Bennett in "game" action. You can only get so much of a read off drills.

Arnold, Gaudreau, Kulak... the fourth round has been gold for the Flames. Arnold looked a step ahead of everyone in Group B today
Carroll was the best of the walk-ons today. Didn't look out of place with the Flames guys, and would be deserving of a contract if he keeps this up
I'd be curious to see how Coda Gordon compares to this group of prospects. He certainly can't be worse than a few of the walk-ons

Anyone know if there'll be an opportunity for autographs after the scrimmage? I know last year people waited around the rink for the guys to come out after, I didn't bother going down though.
I'd love to get my jersey signed by Johnny Hockey himself, seeing as he will be a full time member this season
