That's odd. His endurance shouldn't be an issue, he may be in the best physical shape of all the prospects. His body fat is next to nil.

Chris Breen always looked like a passable skater in this camps and sessions, and then gameplay came along and it was pretty obvious his foot speed and agility just wouldnt cut it in pro hockey.
Kanzig has a couple years still, but contrary to popular belief, fixing skating fundamentals in your late teens is near impossible. At that point, usually only leg strength and core strength can improve. If you are just not very agile or your stride has flaws, that usually sticks with you the rest of your career.

Maybe he's tired from doing the extra skating drills before the rest of the players came out?

Having low body fat isnt a great indicator of how conditioned your body is endurance wise. Just means you dont have a tonne of fat, which is essentially stored energy. Probably contributes to his energy issues. And will actually be detrimental to his conditioning long term.

possibly. He wasn't doing a ton of skating and it was only about 15 min worth. Just odd.

If I was his nutritional coach, I would be getting his weight up. Not a lot, but definitely 2-3 kgs and increase his body fat. A professional hockey player already struggles to keep on weight throughout a full season. If the kid has nothing to lose, he will never withstand the rigours of full NHL or AHL seasons.

Had an idea!

Eh? Body fat percentage has nothing to do with stored energy.
He gets his energy from his diet.
One day of camp has absolutely zero bearing on his career.

I'd like to see Burke snag Barb Underhill back from the Leafs. She has a program that teaches new techniques to players that dramatically increases their agility and foot speed. She basically turned Brian Boyle and Peter Holland from first round busts to pretty solid hockey players.
Might do wonders for Burkes big guys who can't skate all that well.

Really? I think you may need to read up on how the body works a bit.

I thought she was a private contractor, not under any allegiances to any team. Much like Gary Roberts.
EDIT: Looks like she is indeed the Leafs skating coach. Color me surprised.

I don't think you convert body fat to energy while you are playing hockey. It's more stored carbs and stuff isn't it.

Yes, which is why I said his diet is where he gets his energy for the day from.
Body fat % has absolutely zero bearing on his energy.
The reason NHL players have low body fat percentage is because it means they're not carrying around unnecessary weight.
