I'd say that out of the players listed, Engelland is probably as good as Boughner, Peplinski, or Lowry. Certainly good enough to set an example of hard work and professional behaviour for the rookies. Nobody expects him to set an example of toe-drags or spinoramas – this not being Edmonton.

For me I got sick and tired of watching other teams take a run at our goalie all the time, I'm just hoping that this pick (maybe plus the Bollig pick) makes them think twice about doing that next season.

Engelland isn't half as good as Peplinksi or Lowry were

I'm not comparing them in talent, because in the case of mentoring talent is irrelevant. As for locker room leadership and mentoring as a pro, I don't know. But Treliving thinks highly of him.

He's a right-shooting d-man, which is a big hole on the roster. Wideman is the only other right-shooting D in the entire Flames organization, including draft picks. This is another reason they were willing to pay a premium to get him.
He was asking for a longer term, so they offered more money per year to get him to accept a shorter term.
The salary floor was somewhat of a concern, so they were willing to spend a little more to ensure they weren't going to be forced to make an even worse deal to take on money later.

Good points. And no one mentioned who the other bidders were. But I would pay another premium to keep him out of a rivals hands.

Engelland is the single worst regular defenseman in the entire NHL at controlled zone exits. First pass or carrying the puck out of the zone.
The entire NHL.
Let me know if you want the link to his advanced stats. They are not pretty.

I would like the link, I would not be surprised at all but I would be interested in seeing the link.
Signings like this one really make you wonder whether Treliving and Burke instead of Feaster and Weisbrod was a lateral move in terms of hockey intelligence or whether our front office has regressed and taken a step backward.

Put me in the category of being disappointed in this signing. By every measure he isn't good at hockey so I hope he does a stand up routine in the dressing room to keep guys happy. Really not sure why we have him.
As for the "good team guy" / "bad player", I still don't like the signing. While a happy team is nice, they still have to play hockey

Yeah a defenceman who is known more for his fighting than his playing effectiveness doesn't turn my crank either. He sounds like a more physical SOB but before we jump to conclusions, I'm going to watch him play. Reminds me a little of Vandermeer who I didn't care for much.

I've liked most, if not all things, the flames have done since hiring Burke. This signing is not one of them. Just like when we picked up Jones ans SoB I truly believe that a contract should be somewhat trade able if you want to go in another direction. You can add engelland to the NTC list because no one is taking him off our hands.
I've seen him play enough to know that he is much worse in his own zone than Butler. Yes he brings a tough streak and is noted as a good locker room guy but that does not justify his contract. Should also note that Butler was well liked in dressing room and has been reported that he had some quite leadership qualities also. If butler had been given this contract CP site would have crashed.

He brings a physical edge that Butler didn't. The thing I'm confused about is who is actually going to play hockey when Bollig, Big Ern and Engelland are on the ice?
He got heavily sheltered minutes in Pittsburgh, as did the other two. There's only so many sheltered minutes to go around. One of these guys will be playing in over their head

A guy like Hudler can be lured in with the chance of being the go-to guy who gets the best minutes, but for guys like Engellund, the icetime and role on the team is pretty much the same everywhere. There's just not really anything we could offer him besides lots of money.
I don't really see why someone equivalent would sign here for a more reasonable paycheck. I'm guessing Trelivings options were
a) overpay
b) don't get anyone
c) get crap like SOB, who can't actually play enough minutes to make a difference as a physical presence.
Right now, I hate overpaying less than I hate getting a crappy player or not getting anyone. So while I'm hardly in extacy over this signing, I'm okay with it. This is just how it is right now.
Welcome to rebuild country.

Completely agreed with Treliving's comments about the contract...
Didn't want to give term. Say it again. Didn't want to give term.
Gave extra dollars (at a time when they are reaching for the floor) in order to keep the term short. Got a character guy for an interim period to fill a gap.
Whining about the salary is completely missing the big picture IMO.

I'm not upset about the money, we're miles away from it mattering at all. I'm disappointed that we keep getting players to fill a role (playing physical and acting as a deterrent) that only had so many sheltered minutes to give.
