$2.9M for this guy? Fack! Burke and crew screwed this one up. Over under on him playing at some point in the minors this year?

Nice retirement contract for a guy who hasn't proved he's deserving of one.
He says Calgary was attractive because they're a young team, eager, lots to build on, and will increase his role. Why not say the real reason, a 198% increase in salary...

No he doesn't.
2.9 million is more than we should have paid but for the next two years it's hard to see how it affects us at all since we won't be close to the cap and in the 3rd year if we are so good that 2.9 matters he will be a UFA so likely easy to move even if just for a 6th rounder.
Don't like the amount but it isn't enough to be close to as bad as some are making it out to be.

The 3 million is to hit the floor. He's not that good of a player, but he'll help with some physicality on the back end.
Spending 10 million on Raymond Hiller and Engelland is great if you're intending on not improving much but not outright tanking.

Love it! Nobody is messing with our kids!
There was obviously demand for him, you don't just pay way more than everyone else. This was market for him.
Grats, Bollig, Engelland!

I don't care if 10 teams were in on him. As soon as the bids broke 2 million I'd be out.
Possible buyout in 1-2 seasons.

Third oldest player on the team now (behind McGrattan and Hiller).

If you've overpaying a guy just to hit the cap floor, you do it on a one year term, not 3.
This is a bad signing.

2.9 per is an over payment, but on a 3 year term he just brings some toughness to the back end and helps the team make the cap while the young guns get going.
More than enough cap to spare, why not.

6 x 3.5-4million, is reasonable extension next summer. If he has another year like last year, that increases.
|
My point was that 2.9 million is a huge and crazy overpayment.
I understand one is RFA and the other UFA, but those things get brought up. At any rate if Eng is worth 2.9 then Brodie is worth 6 if you compare what you get on the ice. And Brodie has earned a huge bump already.

We're a floor team and have made high quality character and grit priorities. We're not the only ones to do so - so of course we have to pay a premium. 3 years is nothing.
The more I head about the player, the more I like the deal. We aren't going to be a good team, but everyone is going to hate playing us.

I know we have the youngsters need chances to grab a roster spot, but don't we still need a Cammi replacement and an extra D-man? I mean, haven't we lost Russell and Butler from our D core and only replaced one of them?

$27 million for Dave Bolland was a mistake. $2.9/year for a physical bottom pairing D is the going rate, and it has literally zero long term impact on our ability to retain key players.

Have you watched Del Zotto play? They guy is a cluster**** in his own end. People keep mentioning him but he is brutal. Would much rather have Engelland play here for short term.

Because he isn't there just to punch faces.
Since when did being a good fighter mean that is all you can do?
Between Englland and Bollig there have been some real dumb comments ignoring guys ability in only focusing on fighting.

I am trying to justify it, I just can't. Have they signed his contract just to show other teams that they are willing to buy contracts out? I am honestly baffled... seems just like a waste of money on a 6th defenseman. No not cap space, just money; I just can't see this contract becoming into an asset.
