Hartley turned Butler into a serviceable player... the useless guy that almost cried when he was at fault for a goal. He could probably work wonders with Gilbert

Gilbert is ripe with "no good" taint... I think he would blossom and contribute in our system.

Don't really care. We need to spend money and were not giving anything up.

The Butler / Gilbert debate seems pretty irrelevant to me.
We're talking about the #6 guy on a lottery team here. Just looking for an NHL body (though some physicality would be nice)

To be fair, I'm pretty sure it's Cloutier who's done the teaching with the defencemen.

I wonder what both Panther fans think of Tom Gilbert's play last season.

I guess it depends on the price tag and term.
Getting ex-Oilers can be fun if they turn into Oiler killers.

Gilbert instead of Butler? Cant believe anyone would complain. Doesnt have to be Gilbert either, pick anyone. Its Wotherspoons spot to lose.
I can not think of any defenseman on the team that has coffed up the puck as much as Butler ever. Tons of blocked shots? Stop passing to the other teams forwards and you wont have to block shots!
I would prefer Granlund play defense, he takes the body more, can skate, and actually pass. You may say Granlund isn't a defenseman and you would be right, but neither is BUTLER!

Remember this awesome game? http://flames.nhl.com/gamecenter/en/...?id=2010021127
Oilers went up 4-1 with 16:29 left in the third, then Iggy, Glencross, and Staios scored to tie it, and the Flames won in the shootout. It was the only time I was glad Staios was on the Flames' roster.
Also, it's crazy how much both teams' rosters have turned over in only 3 seasons. The only players left on the Flames are Gio, Backlund, Stajan, Glencross, and Bouma; and the only Oilers left are Eberle, Jones, and Petry (plus Hall who was injured).

Gio Backlund and Bouma have improved greatly. Oilers are consistently no good

Not the world's biggest Butler fan, but even I would admit that to even make the NHL, you need to be one of the best players in the world, so I think he is a defensemen.
Regardless, I still would prefer to make room for someone instead of Butler, and maybe it's Gilbert if the price is right.

Why would we go after a #6D? They can overpay a #3D or #4D to help out going over the salary cap ceiling then promote one of the young guy like Wotherspoon to be #6 or #7D. Not a fan of Tom Gilbert though.

Guys like Tom Gilbert are basically who we can expect to over payto join a rebuilding club.

I agree except it was missing this ^

Have you seen the list of ufa dmen available? There is probably only 2-3 top 4 dman available. They will get paid and have a chance to get in playoffs.
The only way I see flames getting true top 4 dman is through trade. Even then it will cost a lot in assets.
