No, he is right. Gilbert is better than Butler, but he is still not what we need.

Not an awful free agent signing if they did. I've come to accept that they're incredibly unlikely to get Niskanen or Boychuk, so all us fans have to keep our expectations down.

Guys like Tom Gilbert are basically who we can expect to join a rebuilding club.

Ugh, not exactly the kind of bruising shut down defenseman I was hoping they would go out and get. This is not a physical group to begin with and Gilbert will definitely not help. If this were to go down it would be as thus:

Giordano-Brodie
Wideman/Russell-Gilbert
Wideman/Russell-Smid

Nobody is going to be afraid of that group, but at least they can move the puck like nobody's business.

Potential brilliant move by Burke and Treliving.
He played for the Oilers in 2010 - Oilers draft 1st overall
Played for the Oilers in 2011 - Oilers draft 1st overall
Played for the Oilers in 2012 - Oilers draft 1st overall
Played for the Panthers in 2014 - Panthers draft 1st overall

Minnesota traded away their 1st round pick in 2013, they wanted to make the playoffs and knew if they had a 1st rounder and Gilbert they wouldn't be able to.

Could be a Connor McDavid terrific signing.

I do remember him with the Oil. Problem is I don't remember ever being overly impressed by him.

If we're dropping Butler, then he's not a bad replacement I guess. There's better fish out there, though. I hope this isn't our "big" target defenceman.

Or this could be our response to Buffalo's buyout of Ehrhoff in the race for last place.

Like I replied in the Reimer thread. The Flames may be getting no bites from their advances on other more notable UFA's during this courting session.

They may be forced to play small ball here and make signings like this one. or maybe they're saving their pennies to make a huge push for one of the UFA wingers.

He's a downgrade on Butler defensively so if McDavid is the plan signing him would coincide.

I could get behind it as a 3rd pairing Dman with Smid. Still think the flames need to target a solid #2/3 Dman. Myers would be awesome

Only if he agrees to get a hair cut. We don't take kindly to greasy Oiler mullets in Calgary. Well maybe Burke does these days based on his appearance.

He's not a draft pick or another's teams top prospect that we can simply acquire by using our cap space. Why would this be happening unless the Flames have completely abandoned the rebuild.

the forwards are responsible for the fear striking it would seem

He's a very underrated player, I'd be in favor of this provided the term isn't stupid.

I'd like to see Wotherspoon full time. I think he's about ready. Perhaps he sticks as the 7th D for now.

If he's ready he'll earn his spot and knock one of the vets out, which I hope and think will happen.

I don't understand how some of these conclusion's are met on CP. So if we make a minor-ish free agent signing of a D-man who will probably be a 4/5/6th Dman we have completely abandoned the rebuild?

I miss Butler already, but if Gilbert guarantees 1st pick, oh well.
Still rather see a kid play.
