Maybe our 2nd and Hanowski? They can use both of their seconds and maybe reenter the 1st round with a later pick.

No one else in the top 5 positions will be dumb enough to take Ritchie over any of the consensus top kids. Normally I wouldn't even have an issue with the Flames drafting for need (eg. size on wing) in a draft where the top group includes several players. The thing is, Ritchie isn't one of them. He is a tier below. I'm pretty sure (if it isn't just a smoke screen tactic) that we're the only one touting this kid as actually being in the mix. And tbh it's embarrassing as a fan.
You can only try to outsmart everyone when you have the track record to show that your scouting staff can spot NHL talent like others can't. Teams like Detroit have that. We do not. It would be incredibly stupid on our part, unless we trade down to 6 or lower. And I'd hate for us to help Vancouver's draft position, so even that sounds stupid.

The above link suggests Richie is right there with the top 5 goal scorers of the last 10 drafts. Of course, those top 5 went on to become stars in the NHL.
|
Huh? You really want to talk about a guy with 1.21 ppg in the same company as a guy who had 2.50?
Even the author of that piece says his closest comparable is Landeskog. The guy who gets Kane, Tavares, and Stamkos in his write-up is Reinhart.

I do like that Even Strength Primary points per game stat from that website, I think even strength points mean more to creating a strong team then having a bunch of PP point generators.
Lots of guys in the 0.5 to 0.55 range (or lower) for that stat didn't end up translating their offense very good to the NHL level.
RNH
J.Staal
Laad
Pouliot
B. Schenn
Niedereiter
Kadri
Monahan
Scheifele
Hamill
Mueller
Couture
Hodgson
Those forwards were all taken with top 10 picks and while it is too early to tell for a lot of them, you also have a pretty good group of players who haven't quite lived up to expectations offensively yet.
The guys who are 0.75 or above in their draft year have translated to elite/top line players with two exceptions.
Kane
Tavares
Stamkos
Hall
Seguin
Strome
Gagner
The players in this draft that are 0.75 or above:
Bennett
Draisaitl
Ritchie
Fabbri
Very interesting the Fabbri is also the only player outside of P.Kane in that grouping to have elite markings in 4 or more offensive categories. Have to think he would be higher ranked if he was 6'0".

Nick Richie
While Bennett has run away with many of the individual accolades in the OHL this season, Nick Ritchie’s numbers indicate that he has serious top-5 talent.
His 0.44 even-strength goals-per-game place him sixth in an elite group of OHL forwards the past 12 years who have broken 0.40: Patrick Kane, Tyler Seguin, John Tavares, Steven Stamkos, Gabriel Landeskog, Ritchie, Bennett, Jeff Skinner, and Nail Yakupov.
What is more, of his 35 assists, 27 have been primary, and only eight of his 35 assists have been scored on the power-play.
Another compelling statistic for Ritchie: he has already cleared 6’2″ and 220 lbs. There have been four OHL/WHL forwards over 6’2″ selected top-10 in the NHL draft since 2003. Each of the four has been selected higher than his pre-draft scoring would indicate, and each has been successful at the NHL level: Eric Staal (2nd overall), Jordan Staal (2nd), Andrew Ladd (4th), and Ryan Johansen (4th). Of the four, only Eric Staal achieved more points-per-game than Ritchie his pre-draft season.
|
Quote:
Ritchie has an abnormally high number of primary assists to secondary assists:
EV: 27G, 20A1, 6A2
PP: 11G, 06A1, 2A2
SH: 02G, 01A1, 0A2
Because if this his “primary” EV points-per-game is remarkable:
|
|
It's not a stretch at all to suggest Ritchie is a top 5 talent in this draft - I still think Calgary takes whoever is left of the big 4, with Ritchie as their #5.

I honestly think the Flames try hard to pick up another pick in the top 10 and target Ritchie. Personally think that they try really hard for that 5th overall pick if the Islanders really are shopping it.
If we could leave the draft with two of Draisaitl, Bennett, Reinhart, and Ritchie that would be amazing.

If we can manage to get another 1st in this year's draft, that would be awesome.
Rebuild Year 1: 2013 - #6, #22, #28
Rebuild Year 2: 2014 - #4, ?
Getting another first would further along this rebuild.

Just for contrast. Garth Snow after announcing he wants to trade his 1st rounder for immediate help:
Aaron Lerner @alerner31 · Jun 18
More Draft: "I don't think any player in this years draft is ready to play in the NHL this year and if they do, they're being rushed"

Ekblad is more than ready to play in the NHL - Snow proving again why he is clueless.

Obviously the Islanders want to do whatever they can to make sure next years pick isnt a lottery pick. Wonder if we can grease them with Hudler + 2nd + Wideman or something? would be nice to pick 4,5.

he consensus among NHL scouts is that Thatcher Demko is the clear No. 1 in this year's goaltending crop, and stands a fair chance of landing in the first round.
However, at Red Line, we see him as just one of a closely ranked top four grouping. Overall, we find the netminding class to be a mediocre bunch without a true top-end talent, albeit with decent depth through the middle rounds. We expect to see probably eight to 10 goalies selected in the first three rounds in Philadelphia next week.
For Red Line, the No. 1 guy, by a whisker, is Mason McDonald, who combines great length and wingspan with really good flexibility and athleticism for a gangly kid. He barely got to play in the season's first half while backing up a veteran, but blossomed after a midseason trade. McDonald showed improved techniques, strong lateral movement and a willingness to challenge shooters aggressively. For our money, he has the most long-term upside.
Next up for Red Line is Igor Shestyorkin, a super-competitive kid who never gives up on a play. The cat-like acrobat shows phenomenal reflexes and anticipation, and almost never gets beaten by anything clean - it has to be a rebound, deflection, or screen shot. He needs plenty of work on his technique, but his focus and concentration are outstanding. The biggest downside is clubs not being certain of his future intentions - he has indicated a willingness to come to North America once his Kontinental Hockey League contract is done, but his availability is not a given.
|
Again the article has summaries for every goaltender in their top 10.

Ekblad, Draisaitl, and Ritchie are physically ready for the NHL. Reinhart and Dal Colle wasn't much smaller than Monahan at the draft. Bennett could surprise and bulk up a lot in the off-season. So it's not impossible, but I think only Ekblad is a heavy favourite to make the NHL. I see one of Reinhart and Draisaitl also making it.
