who cares. Sam Bennett is good at the game of hockey, I couldn't care less about the number of pull ups he can do.

The only possible thing I can think of pull ups relating to in terms of hockey is faceoffs, which albeit, can be a concern.
It's interesting. A lot of those on the Oilers forum have now flipped and would prefer Draisaitl. Bennett won't be playing in the NHL next season and will probably follow a path closer to that of Ryan Strome.
I don't know if MacTavish has that kind of patience. (though, I'm not sure the Flames do either).

Don't exaggerate to make a point.
I used to live beside a park, and watch an 80-ish year old man do about 3 or 4 pull-ups on a tree branch every day as he strolled thru that park.
While I don't look at Bennett any differently as a hockey player, I can't help but be humiliated for him. He exercises for a living... and he can't do 1 rep of an exercise that most children just grow up doing randomly on any hanging object.

I still think it was an act to make sure he isn't picked by the oilers. He can't do a pull up but maybe he's smarter than most.

This is what I am thinking as well. He likely knows the Oilers have a problem with too many weak forwards. If he plays the I'm weak too card, he might just slide on by to Calgary.

While that's probably far fetched it's probably got the Oilers at least thinking for sure given how they already have a skinny weakling in RNH. Bennett won't be NHL ready for at the very least another year. Would be fantastic if it played out that way and he made it to the Flames.

Actually, I would suggest his incapability to do a pullup suggests lack of motivation to be the best he can be.
A pullup isn't that hard to do if your body fat is under 10%, which his is.
Lots of players are good at the game of hockey. Takes a hell of a lot more than that to be even an okay NHL player.

Every year this same conversation takes place, 'I'm a fat 50-year-old with chronic constipation and I can do more pushups than these kids!' Every year. Two weeks from now no one will remember who got what scores at the combine.

C'mon, I doubt that it was planned, that would be a serious character issue. That it could make it more likely that he drops to the Flames, that could be happening though.

I'm telling you, Florida will take him first overall.

Its an easily correctable problem but at the same time I imagine it does cause concern as far as his ability to hold up physically in the NHL next season. A team picking in the top 3-5 spots is usually looking for a prospect with the high end skill that translates quicker then normal to the NHL.
If it makes a team like the oilers pass on him for that reason alone it will be very good for the Flames who don't absolutely need to win next year.

You never know with this draft but I'm inclined to believe Florida will trade down and take Ehlers or Nylander.

I guess that's maybe possible if a team really is that short sighted, but let's remember that his physical readiness isn't determined by one test. How did he do on the other tests? If it's not as bad as the worst test, it could even make teams think he can make quick progress with the right knowledge given that he's just neglected one part of his body. It always goes both ways. Bad test on a top talent can also mean that he has even more room to improve than the competition.
And furthermore, all the aspects of a player that people bring up in this conversation will be primarily judged from how a player plays, not in a lab test. I think the combine is an opportunity to observe and interact with prospects, but the scores aren't very meaningful with regard to choosing a player. The teams already know a ton about the players there. They evaluate readiness based on their experience of watching junior players for decades.

This is a pile of A hands forward pull up isn't as easy as you think or claim for most people including young athletes. This isn't using the bicep muscle it's using the brachialis and brachioradialis muscles which unless you do a lot of rowing or shoot bows it doesn't develope easily.
Hockey players at his age usually train for skating and have a big heavy lower body compared to training the upper for a fricken pullup, Gary Roberts couldn't do one at his age. did he have a motivation problem?
Oh and by the way, less than half of NHL hockey players show up at camp with 10% or under body fat.

Really?
Show me 1 quote where anybody said "I can do 1 pushup and this kid can't".
We're talking about 1. Not being able to do ONE pull-up is embarrassing.

I'm sorry, but a professional athlete should be able to do one pullup. Especially if he knew he was supposed to train for it, and especially if he SAID he was training for it.
The combine is there for a reason. If it doesn't matter to the teams involved, why do it?
Truth is that nobody here has a clue how the combine results make a difference to each teams draft rankings.
The tests are done for a reason.
