I posted this in the other thread too:
Quote:
The Oilers, whom I believe are leaning to Draisaitl if he’s there when it’s their turn, are probably on the phone to Tallon, too. The Buffalo Sabres pick second and Calgary fourth, although Flames president Brian Burke has a history of big-splash draft deals (Chris Pronger, the Sedin twins), so expect Burke and his new GM, Brad Treliving, to be all over moving to the No. 1 spot.

That pick is up for grabs. This is the one and only chance they Flames may get to get a franchise player.
I hope they get it done.

If it costs us pick #34 to get pick #1, then so be it.

I don't know how this could possibly be framed as a negative. Wouldn't want the management team going "Well, we've got pick #4, so there's absolutely no reason to consider any more than four players!"

Sounds to me they have two of the big four they are crossing their fingers for.

Yup, I think there are 2 of the top 4 the Flames love and then a group of players in the mix from 3-6 or 4-8 or whatever.
If the 2 favourites are gone by #4 I can't say I'd be disappointed if Flames management chooses the kid they think will be the best impact hockey player, even if they aren't in the "big 4".

I wouldn't say head and shoulders above particularly after rookie seasons

Run through any 10 years of NHL drafts beginning at least 4 years ago. It's remarkable that the top 10 players in any given year often come from all over, with many "blue chip" top 10 players becoming marginal NHLers, if that.
The Draft is fun for trades and chatter, but ultimately it's a crap shoot for even the best scouting teams, and you'll never really have an idea of whether it's a good draft or not for 4 years or more. Getting upset or hyped over a pick is akin to getting upset or hyped about getting (or not) the lottery numbers you wanted.

Historically, each draft pick was one guy. Has some thing changed?

at the risk of this thread turning into a Morgan Rielly thread, if all the picks from that year are fairly close then he might technically go first...might being the operative word.
as far as knowing how to play defence, don't confuse him with gardiner, rielly is quite good and was only 19 in his first year...he didn't look overwhelmed and think he will be a top 2 in this league.

That's absolutely what they should be doing. One key tenant of approaching anything scientifically is repeating to see if the answer is the same.
Second, anyone who thinks there's no value in questioning consensus has ignored the whole history of NHL drafts. Alexander Daigle was the consensus #1, but had the Senators really dug in and seen the red flags of his work ethic and commitment to the game, they could have taken Pronger or Kariya. That's just one of countless examples.

Exactly like it says above, there are 4 standouts - and we have the 4th. What are they going to say? "We have the 4th pick, we are going to let the top 3 go ahead, and we'll take who is left..."
