I still am very happy they took Monahan, don't get me wrong here. But Nichushkin is right there IMO.
Yeah, I'd still take Monahan but Nichushkin getting picked wouldn't have been a problem. Having Sven/Gaudreau/Klimchuk on the left and Poirer/Nichushkin/Ferland on the right with one of the available centers this year would have still been a good start to a rebuild.

For me this isn't a trick question. Usually the obvious answer is the right answer. Take who's left of the top four and move on to the second round. I'm not going to blow a gasket if we take Dal Colle, Ehlers, or Nylander but Caged Great probably will if we take Richie.

I can see it now, Richie patrolling the wing on the first line for Marcus Granlund.

Queasy was the mildest way to describe many fans' feelings in 1999 when the Flames and Rangers swapped 1st picks as part of the Savard trade, only to see golden boy Jamie Lundmark fall to the Rangers, leaving the Flames to pick Saprykin.

Then neither player turned into anything special.

Fans gut feelings on draft day are a poor judge of results.

I actually hope this means the Flames are after the 5-8 picks in addition to the #4.

That would be cool. Two 1st in the top ten would be great.

Not sure how they would make that happen.

Oleg contributed to the run in 04. So Flames really won that one.

Perlini is a guy I could see making a trade for another top ten pick. Honestly. 7-10 there are still some excellent players to nab. Kapanen, Perlini, Nyander if he doesn't go 5-6.

Not sure if Botchford is just speculating or he is actually hearing something from a source:

Virtanen, who is from Abbotsford and scored 45 goals with the Calgary Hitmen this season, showed up for his interviews in a shoulder sling.

He had shoulder surgery 10 days ago and his recovery is expected to take four to six months. Many assumed this would impact his draft slot, long believed to be in the six to 10 range of the first round.

But that hasn’t happened.

In fact, the idea that Brian Burke and the Calgary Flames are considering taking him at the No. 4 spot is gaining traction.

That would be going off the board a little bit for the Flames, but if there’s one team executive expected to do something odd in the top four it’s Burke.

I kind of hope the flames pull off a reasonable trade with Florida for #1 to nab Ekblad - seems the class of this draft. Draft a centre next year (not that I'd be upset wth Bennett, Draisatl or Reinhart, but Ekbald might be with paying something).

I have thought for a while now that one of Dal Colle or Ritchie are their guy. So I don't think I'll be shocked by any pick they make. I have a lot of trust in Tod Button at this point so I won't be freaking out no matter who they take.

He probably built that speculation off the fact that he's in a video on the Flames website.

Botchford is a hack tabloid journalist.

Why is Burke expected to do something odd?

This is Botchford trying to give Canucks fans hope so one of the top 4 or Dal Colle will fall to them at 6th.

Keep on hoping nux fans.

There seems to be just as much hype regarding Virtanen from the Canucks.

Please God just let us just pick one of the big 4/5.

maybe because he drafted Reilly 5th overall in 2012 and claimed they would have taken him with the first overall....seeing him play, he very well might be number one if the draft was held again.

Why does it matter what he said after he drafted him?

It's not like Reilly was a reach. Most pre-draft ranking had him right around there with Forsberg.

I bet their list is

Bennett
Ekblad
Reinhart
Draisaitl
Dal Colle
Virtanen
Ritchie
Nylander

Conroy said they're considering 6 players about a week ago, I could see them taking Virtanen if Bennett, Ekblad and Reinhart are gone. The way Conroy talked about the draft and how the ant character and hard workers but game changers it just sounded like they want Bennett more than anyone else

I wasn't agreeing with the writer, just speculating...I don't believe Burke would do anything crazy either.

Especially when we've been told that Treliving is in control of this draft.
