Wonder where he would have ranked on our d prospect pool. Probably higher than Coda Gordon on our F depth chart.
Hope Treliving gambles on some of these late round selections of guys that plummet in the rankings despite having obvious potential. No reason why Feaster shouldn't have picked Ebert given the state of our d prospects. Tools are there and they may still come around.

The Flames in recent years did pick guys that were ranked higher on some projections.
In the 7th round of that draft the Flames picked Matt Deblouw who actually looked somewhat interesting after his next year but has completely tanked since.

plus Deblouw himself was a guy that was falling in that draft, quite a number of rankings had him firmly in the 3rd/4th round. CSS had him at 51 among NA skaters for example.

Eric Roy another example. Very similar to Ebert. Once projected to go in the 1st round, Flames picked him in the 5th.

Ryan Culkin, at 66 on the CSS North American skaters list, was the lowest-ranked player drafted by the Flames in 2012. Ebert was ranked 96th.

What's different about Ebert is that he was a projected first rounder that almost fell out of the draft. I get that we've selected guys that slipped from projected 3&4 rounds in the later rounds but to get a guy in the 7th round when he was looking like a top ten months earlier in a position of need would have been an interesting gamble. If you had Ebert and Roy in your prospect pool one of them turns out that's one less defenceman you have to acquire.

Every player a team drafts they do so hoping they will become a player. I would hope teams make decisions on their evaluations not by prior draft status

Yeah - was hoping to get a better gauge on Winther once he was dealt to Hitmen - injuries unfortunately disrupted his stay here and tough for him to find his groove. While I didn't see anything magical, I was impressed by his hockey IQ. Could see him rebounding; tough to know what you have right now.

Hard to consider Maidens a top prospect even among those named, considering he hasn't played in 2.5 years.

Oskar Sundqvist looks quite intriguing.
6'3" right-handed C/RW with a nasty disposition:
From HF:
Quote:
A tall, rangy forward with a nasty on-ice disposition and offensive talent to spare, Oskar Sundqvist brings a unique package of skills to the center position. Having played in the lower levels of Swedish junior hockey, Sundqvist's upside is largely still unknown. However, given his size, skating, and offensive skills, he could one day develop into an effective two-way center.
Aside from learning how to play on a smaller rink, he must add considerable weight and strength to his frame. He also needs to develop more explosiveness and cut back on penalties.

It sounds like Sundqvist has little interest in developing in the AHL and that's where he needs to be if he wants to make it to the NHL.

Sundqvist took a step backwards statistically in Sweden this year compared to the previous one. Any ideas why? Fewer minutes? Injuries?

I wouldn't be against inviting any of Sutter, Vail, Smith, Gunnarsson, Spelling and Brown to the development camp, same with Coda Gordon if we don't sign him.
