So, in the last 7 months or so.....
1. Regier fired
2. Feaster fired
3. Gillis fired
4. Mcphee fired
5. Rutherford "moved up"
6. Holmgren "moved up"
7. Shero fired
Almost a quarter of the GM's replaced in the just over half a calendar year.

Also not sure why you are spending $3.75 million on Pascal Dupuis when he's a 3rd/4th liner who scores because he's got the best player in the world on his line.

Kris Letang
Alex Goligoski - turned into Neal
Ryan Whitney turned into Kunitz
Colby Armstrong
Erik Christensen turned into Pascal Dupuis
Maxime Talbot
Tyler Kennedy
Now sure, Patrick had much higher picks but still that is way better than anything Shero's ever done. And saying that Shero didn't pick until the 4th round or things like that is actually Shero's doing. Sure if you go deep and make it to the Cup finals it was worth it. But in these last 4 seasons Shero's been dumping off picks to the trade market to bolster holes in the roster. Unless you hit multiple triples that will deplete you long term which is what is happening.
Those who think Shero was a good GM probably are the same people who think Sutter was a good GM too. Flashy trades, big name players, etc and long-term failure. Because the role of the GM first and foremost is to draft and develop players.
In many ways the Penguins are a more extreme example of the lame Flames circa 2007-2012. Ride a core of good players but significantly mortgage the future because you can't grown depth from within.
|
Oops. Totally forgot that Shero only took over in '06
You're right....makes it even worse.

Yep. At least Kunitz was scoring 50+ points before he started playing with Crosby.

Blysma should have been fired last year. .... after the first game of the Ottawa series where he put Iginla on the 3rd line and kept him there for the rest of the playoffs.
He used Iginla as a 3rd liner. This year Stempniak got the same ice-time (15 minutes /game) in the playoffs as Iginla did last year.

It seems that with Shero for every Goligoski for Neal and Niskanen there's a Douglas Murray for two 2nd rounders. Odd how people don't mention those trades when they talk about how decent a GM Shero has been.

I don't think it will take either of these guys long to find jobs. The Penguins are routinely at the top of the standings. I personally would be thrilled if the Flames had "only won 1 Stanley Cup" during the period the Penguins did.

Its almost Oiler-esque. A lot of the heroes of the cup run and then cup win got big contracts afterwards.

I don't like that. Might as well let him go now. He should not have to sit around wondering if he has a job or not. There are vacancies available right now, but who knows later.

They need someone to protect Crosby a little more. He was getting pushed around way to much in the rangers series...

Yeah I don't like this as well as the new GM will be expected to make progress in the playoffs and rolling with Blysma is essentially pinning a lot of hope that the GM will be able to work magic on the roster which isn't realistic in one season whereas a new voice in the locker room can sometimes be the key much like Sutter in LA. You have to look at the two biggest issues the Penguins have had in the playoffs is the goaltender and the coach being outcoached. If I'm a new GM I go clean slate on both fronts.

"Coach being outcoached" is one of the lamest tropes in hockey.
A) What does it even mean?
B) How could credibly you quantify it?
c) How could you credibly state it when you've never worked as a coach in a professional league?
d) It always simply correlates to team x losing and you're simply trying to make up reasons to explain that loss
edit:
Bylsma got outcoached by AV because AV was able to coach Lundqvist to play better and Bylsma's coaching didn't make Crosby play as well

The last trade that Shero made was Stempniak for a 3rd round pick.

Last year they had Iginla and Morrow and Cooke and yet Blysma thought that Crosby need Dupuis and Kunitz to be most successful.

Haha. I can tell you get satisfaction from this. Closes the book on your Stempniak crusade nicely.

I'm seeing some Moon'esque posting from you as it's clear you don't like Shero and like Blysma and it's black and white. That's fine and all but Blysma hasn't done a good job coaching in the playoffs end of story. Whether it be the ridiculous run and gun series with the Flyers or terrible misuse of Iginla and line juggling last year a lot of the wounds have been self inflicted. How do you shut out a team two games in a row for a 3-1 lead in a series and not be able to get your team to even play hard for the next three games? You can't really pin this latest loss on Fleury as he wasn't that bad. Either Malkin, Crosby, Neal, Letang, etc are bad hockey players or the coach isn't getting them ready to play hard enough to battle through the playoffs.
Lets not forget the Penguins have lost to a lower seed in the playoffs every season since winning the cup. Every single season and in most of those series looking pretty bad. They barely beat the Islanders and Jackets in successive first round series which goes to show how their play in the playoffs is a major issue. How can that not be on the coach to a large extent?
