I think he would be great on the 2nd pairing. That being said who's gonna pay their 3rd Dman 7mill??

Those are the types of contracts the Flames need right now to meet the cap floor. Take on a bad contract and gain more assets. IMO Toronto would be adding to the deal to unload the contract.

Did Rhett Warrener ever address the Iginla/Regehr/Dion fight? I wonder if this was just a myth or what?

I don't know about that, but I heard there was a Phaneuf + Conroy "issue" too. I don't see him coming back and I don't want this guy. Send him to EE with the other cancer attitudes.
I would beleive He would crush everything accomplished this year in a matter of weeks if he showed up.

Sounds more like Dreger being a mouthpiece for the Leafs trying to drive up a potential return.

Not for 7 years man, if he's hobbling around the ice and his skating has gone down this far, he's going to be immobile in 7 years, and what asset do the Leafs have that they're going to trade us, without a major cost due to Dion being their top defenseman.
He's not a cap dump for the Leafs he's an asset barrel.

Leafs won't be happy with the return with Phaneuf if he does get shipped. Even though Phaneuf has a 7 year contract and Bouwmeester had a year left on his contract, I am thinking that Phaneuf will get a similar return just like the rented Bouwmeester did. That, and there will be retained salary involved as well. That contract was just bad.

Because when you need advice on building your hockey team, you ask Phil Kessel.

However, if you are looking for the best Large Pizza, and Barley Sandwiches, in each NHL city I'd have to think he'd be my go to.

Teams aren't going to the Leafs for Phaneuf, the Leafs want to dump him. Leafs aren't going to get what they want for him, so it's either shut up and take what is offered or keep him. He is only 29 and in his prime years as an athlete. I think he is a ways away from being immobile.

They just gave him a 7 year deal six months ago. Be quite the turnaround to suddenly be dying to get rid of him.

I'm sure they're far from dying to trade him, however nobody is breaking down the doors to get him either I'm sure. He is being shopped so there has to be some reason.

if he was a UFA multiple teams would be offering him a similar contract...his contract isn't as bad as some think. Average players of that age are making 5M these days and the cap is going up

All a team uses is cap space when signing splatter though so giving up assets for a player with a questionable contract is certainly different. It is not a good contract in terms of a hometown discount or trade but I agree it is standard UFA overpay.
This move has the Oilers written all over it but both teams need D. Perhaps Ganger+3 for Dion+8 and the Leafs eat $500k per season? Oilers draft Ritchie/Virtanen and the Leafs get Bennett?

I can see that happening if the Oilers don't get Ekblad. For now if I were them I'd take a wait and see approach. If both Sams are picked 1-2 and Ekblad falls into their lap, there would be no reason to do that trade.

depends on what they are looking for, I don't see them getting a ton in return...my point is that its not a salary dump that the Leafs will bend over backwards to unload him. Teams will be lining up if the asking price is reasonable.

What is a reasonable asking price though? Another overpaid but decent player that is youngish?
Myers and Stewart from Buff for Dion and Kadri?

You'd have to think that most of the teams on Phaneuf's trade list would have cap issues or internal budgets to deal with. Maybe we can get in on a 3 way trade and take some cap space to make a deal work?
Toronto to contender:
Phaneuf
Contender to Calgary:
Decent player on bad 2-4 year contract + picks/prospects
Calgary to Toronto:
Lesser value picks/prospects

Phaneuf will be an Oiler by next season, and they will play him 28 min a night, and all will be no good with Edmonton.

Water under the bridge there, what's done is done.
I might consider taking him back but very very unlikely. That has to be one of the worst contracts in the league for a player that is A. not very good right now and B. not going to get better. The only way I would do this is if I get a decent prospect or pick along with The Dion.
The Dion, just another reason to laugh in the general direction of the Leafs.
|
I have this general sentiment as well. I thought Neon Dion was awesome for the Flames on his ELC. Then the fame/money/whatever went to his head and he never really progressed.
I thought bringing in Brent Sutter would help him teach better dzone play but Darryl traded him later that season or was it the season after (I can't remember).
Thanks, but no thanks.
