Wow, that was quick. Is the ink even dry on his extension yet?

Or maybe the Oilers give up something with a little value. Dion's got his problems and I don't want him here, but I don't see them moving Phaneuf for Edmonton's junk either.

The toronto D is horrible. For a team wanting to make the playoffs next year they should be adding to their D not subtracting from it. While I feel Dion is a #3 dman it's not like he has a top pairing partner that he plays with. His partners over the years have been "Butlerisque".
If leafs want to eat salary and admit they made a mistake they should be starting with Clarkson.

That's the thing; his attitude is a cancer. On paper it might look good, in practice it's an awful idea.
They're trading their Captain.... That tells me he's not a very good leader but thinks he is.
He would make the whole team worse with his attitude. We need more hard-working blue-liners, not primadonnas.

Yeah, I'm sure teams are breaking their door down to talk about that contract...

Sounds like there isn't much interest so they don't want to make it seem like they're desperate to trade him.

I'd be happy for Edmonton to get him if they drastically overpay.
I'd be happy for the Flames to get him if we drastically underpay, and Gio said he was ok with it (he knows best what Dion would be like in the room).
Dion can be a good defenceman if not in the prime number 1 spot. With the Flames (assuming his attitude was different than when he was traded from here in the first place AND Gio vouches for him) he'd slot onto the second pairing theoretically, giving us:
Gio - TJ
Dion - Russel
Smid - ?? (one of Butler, Wotherspoon, Breen, someone else).
We trade Wideman and something - if it is a good something Leafs retain salary. That's a solid D.
On Edmonton, Dion immediately becomes their best defenceman and slots in on the prime number 1 slot, a spot he has shown in TO that he is not best suited for. If the Coilers have to overpay to get him, then put him in that position to fail, knowing that they already have a weak locker room - well, that's a recipe for amusement.

You can't bring him in.
Do you put him as a first pairing guy on this team? Absolutely not, he's not that guy anymore. He's a disaster in his own end, his skating has deterioranted.
The Gio Brodie defensive pairing was working really well last year.
If you put him on the second pairing with Russell, its a disaster in the making.
He's paid too high, you don't think Gio would be looking at that contract?
On top of that we got really solid leadership last year, I don't think putting Neon into that mix is a good idea. Plus Toronto won't give him away, the cost will be indredibly high like a 1st a top prospect and/or a young roster player.
I don't want to give any of that stuff up for him.
Edmonton should be in the mix, but Toronto doesn't need offensive help, and Yak is too big of a risk right now. Edmonton and Toronto look like terrible trade partners, they both need blueline and checking help and neither of them have it.

Edmonton getting him would be a dream come true. Adding a guy who can't play defense to an already awful defense core will really expose him.

I know it says they want to move him out west but trading for Phaneuf has Philadelphia written all over it.

The first 2 years in Calgary I loved Dion Phaneuf, he was simply awesome for his age and brought a huge dynamic to the team. But something happened, he never grew into his position. I think his head got to big for his shoulders and his game regressed. I honestly wanted him off the team regardless of return, addition by subtraction. Water under the bridge there, what's done is done.
I might consider taking him back but very very unlikely. That has to be one of the worst contracts in the league for a player that is A. not very good right now and B. not going to get better. The only way I would do this is if I get a decent prospect or pick along with The Dion.
The Dion, just another reason to laugh in the general direction of the Leafs.

Dion for some reason got worse with every season.
He had a lot of promise. I too thought he was second coming...
However, I don't want to see him back as the fights on CP would get out of hand.
Let's hope he doesn't go to Edmonton, the guy likes to headhunt.

Phaneuf is barely an upgrade on Wideman. A guy that clueless defensively had better deliver big-time on the powerplay, and Phaneuf doesn't anymore (49th in defencemen in PPP). I'd balk at taking him even at $4 mil per.

We've already got a great captain. Not to mention the ridiculous contract, and Dion's slipping defensive play, I'd be afraid it would ruin our team chemistry.
