I've never understood the layout of Airdrie. If city planners had been smart, they would have kept the residential areas West of the freeway, and built the commercial and industrial districts east of the freeway.
Instead you have the freeway essentially bisecting neighborhoods, with only a couple(?) of pedestrian overpasses to link the two sides. It must be great if you are a kid, and your friends live on the other side of the freeway.

I've hated Airdrie since I was a child, and it was actually a small town. No reason for the hate then, other than that it looks like Edmonton from the highway - all kinds of tacky commercial establishments higgedly-piggedly along the roadside. But nobody can hate like a kid can irrationally hate.
People who think a place with 50,000+ people is a "small town" have obviously never lived in a real town - 50 000 is a city. And, if you're going to live in a city, why not live in Calgary?
The one good reason I've heard is that it's cheaper there - and there's a reason it's cheaper, it's because compared to living within the Calgary city limits, the amenities and opportunities are vastly circumscribed. What annoys me about Airdrones is that they are always on about how convenient and close it is, and how it's family-friendly, and it's a "community", blah blah blah. No, it's like any other boring suburb in Calgary, except even farther from anything interesting, and lamentably closer to Edmonton. Although, to be fair - cheaper to live in.
If that works for you, good. But understand you're like the guy who buys a Kia and tries to convince everyone it's as good as a Lexus - it annoys people who know better, and by that I mean "everyone".

Sorry that this is slightly off-topic, but Leduc is beginning to resemble Airdrie, as there has been so much development on the west side of QE2 in the last 10 years. However, unlike Airdrie, Leduc is actually more expensive to live in than Edmonton. It must be the close proximity to Nisku and the airport.
I loved Calgary, but if I move back, it would be a 3 hour commute. It may be worth it though, as I am usually gone for 3 week shifts. Calgary is just so much better than Edmonton. However, I would never choose Airdrie to live. Too bland, and if I had to choose a town outside the city, it would either be Cochrane, Okotoks, or even Strathmore.
I actually find Bowness an attractive place to live. Maybe it has not the greatest reputation, but it has character. Same with Inglewood. Forest Lawn and the whole Northeast area of Calgary doesn't really appeal to me, but I'm sure it has its benefits.

You kidding me? We Bert Church kids never interacted with the George Mac kids. That freeway kept those undesirables to the west, where they belonged!
As far as the layout goes, you'd have to take it up with the town planners of 1980, but back then it certainly would have made more sense to do it that way. Like most things southern Alberta, I suspect the concept of long-term planning gave way to the realities of Airdrie growing by 1000% in a decade from the mid 70s to the mid 80s. Certainly the current planning seems generally oriented that way: other than Kings Heights, all of the residential growth is happening not just west of the highway, but out past 8th street.

That probably has more to do with Edmonton being no good and less to do with Leduc being good.
Thats the thing about Airdrie, its like a mini-Edmonton. A crummy city just north of Calgary.

Right. I don't think any of the Calgarians are saying that Calgary is Paris. They are merely saying that, relative to the donkey fart of a city that is Airdrie, Calgary looks like Paris. As you quite rightly point out, if one were to directly compare Airdrie to a city like Paris, Airdrie would, relatively speaking, resemble a diarrhea-soaked refugee camp. Mon Dieu!

I'll give you the other two, but what great city has good parking? It usually signifies the opposite... the crappier the parking, the greater the city! Everyone wants to be there, that's why it's hard to park.

I disagree.
Strathmore has a community feel, and actually has somewhat of an identity, with a main street, and a old style downtown. Airdrie has nothing. Where is the character in Airdrie? The pedestrian overpass across the freeway? I would much rather live in Strathmore than Airdrie. The people are far more friendlier, from my personal experience.

I think this thread proves the need for Puckluck to be on CP, without him to stir #### up everyone else feels the need to try to pick up the slack feuding between fellow posters. It was a grand total of one post before this thread was derailed from its original intent. Which is becoming more common on CP, I say this with the authority of a CP lurker for years.
