I guess I have my interpretation thing. I mean frankly, it makes sense to have the old characters back in a lot of ways to hand off the new characters.
It makes a ton of sense to have R2D2 and C3PO back, frankly because if you look at the whole Star Wars story from Attack of the Clones on, its about the life and journey of two droids, especially as we move into a new series without Anakin Skywalker who was really the focal point of the first 6.
I've always had the interpretation that Ben Kenobi's story ends at the end of Jedi. Frankly he's seen his friend and apprentice redeemed, that was really his whole goal in the OT to see his past mistake fixed through the death of Anakin, the fact that he was redeemed was a bonus.
Yoda's story really ends with the return of the Jedi Order and the supposed balance of the force.
If this indeed is taking place 30 years after ROTJ, does Luke really need anymore training and guidance from Kenobi, shouldn't he be powerful enough by now to sense shifting tides in the force in a similar manner to Yoda and Mace Windu?
I'm just hoping that they're not recycling characters to recycle characters. This is an opportunity to create a new mythology. I don't even want the Sith back. I consider their way and their order to be ended when Palpatine and his apprentice died on the Death Star.
I think bringing back ancient Sith Lords would be lame and go against everything that was really established. The fact that they had Sith Lord ghosts in SWTOR and the EU is one thing that drives me crazy because in order to become one with the force, you according to mythology in Star Wars lore, you have to accept dying and accept sacrifice and let go of your physical life. The Sith are incapable of doing that, they are incredibly selfish when it comes to their life.
If the other rumor is that the enemy is Darth Plageous Palpatines former master, it poops all over Palpatine who killed his master in his sleep (actually drunken passed out stage but who's counting)
Beyond that what's Obi Wan been doing for the last thirty years of what I'm assuming is relative peace, and Yoda?
Is Luke sitting in his kitchen making a peanut butter and Gungan jelly sandwich when Obi wan pops up "Luke I don't want to lose you to cardiovascular disease like I lost my uncle, let go of the peanut butter". Then Yoda pops up on the other side "hmmm try a cut up banana in there, good good" Then Luke goes to the bathroom and Palpatine ghost is sitting on the can reading a magazine "Your bathroom, like my bathroom is now mine"
Ok, here's what I don't want to see
1) Hyper exaggerated force powers. We didn't see Jedi pulling ships out of orbit in the moves, we saw them move faster, forsee events jump higher and general have a fairly marginal combat advantage over normal humans. I don't want to see Jedi shirting planets orbits or killing someone from across the galaxy. Frankly the reason why Vader in Star Wars said, "The power to destroy a planet is insignificant compared to the power of the force" was mainly because in his life time, he saw Palpatine use the force to predict and manipulate history to that point. But he never saw Palpatine tearing a planet apart with his brain"
2) Sith Lords - That order is to me dead and buried, all knowledge of its philosopy and power and rituals died with Palpatine and Vader, the line was broken. For the Sith to come back they'd need to literally start over again to recover that power.
3) Super weapons - EU is so full full of them First there was the death Star, then there was the galaxy gun, then when that wasn't good enough there was the sun crusher, then there was a death star core, then there were Mandelorian indestructable super fighters, then there were super star destroyers, then Exlipse class star destroyers, and factory ships that ate planets. Ok, its the ultimate in lazy writing to use super weapons to me.
4) Having the old generation carrying the main part of the fighting. Solo is going to probably be at least 70, so is Luke, and Leia. Chewbacca is probably like over 100. Let them pass the torch gracefully.
What I would love to see
1) The Empire strikes back or what's left of it - I do like the idea of a Imperial remnant who has spent the last 30 years licking its wounds, and healing itself, maybe the time has come for its revenge. I do like the Sith Emperor story from SWTOR for one aspect. The ancient Sith Empire lost the war against the republic and the Emperor basically came out of nowhere and rallied the empire on a course of revenge.
2) Personally at least in the first movie, I don't want to see a force user enemy, I would love to see just normal people as the enemy, pirates or the Imperial remnant or whatever, something that the Jedi might refuse to fight because its outside of their realm. Something like that could piss off the republic who would turn on the Jedi, or maybe one single person.
3) Kill off a major character in the first one - That could be used to set a path of revenge, but make it a good and meaningful death. This would also allow the torch to be passed on.
3) I do want to see Palpatine again but not as a ghost. I have this vision of a Jedi seeking revenge or power and stumbling across a holocron somewhere. He kneels before it, and it flickers, and you see Palpatine, not as his scared and deformed self but as a normal charming kind eyed Chancellor, He starts teaching and slowly seducing this jedi to the dark side.
4) If you're going to have a dark force user as an enemy wait until the second film. Think of the shock, especially if its someone who was heroic in the first movie.
Here's what I'd love to see
First movie - We revisit all of the old characters, its been a pretty peaceful 30 years. Leia is maybe president, Solo is pretty much a house wife, Chewbacca a throw rug. Luke leads a new Jedi Order. We meet the new characters. Maybe a few are Jedi, maybe some are soldiers or politicians.
Suddenly a threat rises, an incident occurs that kills a major character, and some other important characters. Luke refuses to get involved, the Jedi got drawn into a war before and look what happened to the galaxy. This enemy continues to ramp it up maybe another major character dies. A jedi confronts Luke on his philosopy and decides to go and save the galaxy and vanishes. The threat continues to get worse, the republic turns on the jedi. We see our Jedi trying to gain more power to fight the threat. He's thinks he's doing right he finds Palpatine's Holocron the seduction begins. Luke takes the order into hiding. Leia tries to fight this war, Solo shoots some stuff. Luke goes to find his jedi who has called him for help in dealing with a threat. The movie ends when Luke arrives to help the Jedi and is betrated and murdered. The last scene that you see is a dark jedi standing over Lukes body
Movie 2 - The war is continuing. the threat is increasing. The Jedi hear about Skywalkers death, when the new Emperor displays his body publicly. some of the new order of jedi feeling betrayed by the republic openly join the Empire, we have a new jedi schism. The Jedi now enter the war. Brother against brother. the old characters step back as we see new characters taking their role. Maybe Leia retires out of grief, Solo maybe dies leading troops. Its a dark time for the galaxy. At the end of the movie. We see the possibility of a first victory for the republic, we end with a massive battlefield
Movie 3 - The Imperial Emperor continues to gain power, thanks to Palpatines teachings, he's found a vast pool of knowledge on the ancient Sith. He takes on a familiar apprentice who becomes his executioner. We see a lot of Jedi on former Jedi fighting. It all leads up to an invasion of Coruscant. Here we see the new characters rallying. One of the new Jedi confronts the apprentice to the Emperor and defeats him or her (I'd prefer her). The forces of the republic and the Jedi rally together and in their most desperate hour they confront the Sith Emperor and kill him. The Imperials going oh crap not again, decide to fight to the bitter end and the Imperial threat is finally destroyed once and for all.
The last scene we see all of the new hero's celebrating, maybe you can see Leia there wearing a dress made out of Chewbacca. Maybe you can see a Luke force ghost there somewhere.
Personally I would really like to see Luke as the Jedi who turns against the order and becomes the new emperor but that might be too much.
