Hopefully our Jankowski type picks are a thing if the past. I am very excited to see what is in store for this team in the near future. Great choice by Burke, couldn't be happier.
The irony of this post. Johnny Hockey was an even riskier pick than Jankowski and was driven by a team wanting to work outside the box, just like the Jankowski pick. Personally, I hope the new management continues that practice and does not just go with conventional or traditional hockey thinking.

According to Treliving, to compete in the Pacific, “It’s important to have a blueprint of how you’re going to have some success. To be able to compete with those teams, not only throughout an 82-game season … but how are you going to have success against those teams in a seven-game series? Anybody that’s watched the hockey out here, I don’t think it’s a real big secret. It’s a hard game. Use any description you want. They’re heavy teams. You have to be physically prepared, engaged and ready to go into these games. It’s size, strength and speed. It’s not like these are lumbering teams. They come at you with quickness. And so, without question, when you put together your roster and look at building your teams, you keep those things in mind.
“The entire West now, you look at the Chicagos and the St. Louises. It’s hard. Colorado’s having a heck of a year. And you have developing teams like Edmonton and Calgary. Calgary’s been as a tough an out as anybody the last two months. Obviously, those teams in California have shown they are elite teams in the league. To make the playoffs and to go far in the playoffs, you’re going to have to compete with them.”

not sure how anyone in Calgary can mock Phoenix for their drafting or trades...the have been a far superior team with FAR less resources the last five or so years
He was very complimentary of the Flames in that Jason Gregor interview, after being asked about the tough Pacific division he mentioned that the Flames had been as tough of an out as any team in the second half.

great interview on the FAN960 website with Elliot Freeman on how PHX did their work..... kind of impressive. RE: the operating conditions under PHX, he learns to work when his hands are tied.

I don't think it is a problem if he is the only one interviewed. If they knew he is the guy and are worried about him getting snapped up elsewhere, then pull the trigger - rather than let him slip and get the second best guy (or George McPhee).
Yes, people often forget that in an industry like this, when evaluating candidates for a role like this, anyone Burke was "considering" he already knew / had exposure to the following:
- Their track record in roles (pretty public knowledge what they've accomplished, and even easier for those in the industry to know even more details about it)
- Likely have had dealings with this person already, know what he's like to deal with and how good he is at his job.
- Likely have lots of feedback already on him from the small Peer group of NHL executives.
It's not a job (even a management job in our everyday world) where you actually need to go through the full interview process to really understand what candidates have accomplished and how it compares to the other candidates you are considering. You know all that going into the interview, and the interview is likely more about, what else can you tell me, how do I think you'll fit into the organization and give me some thoughts on what you think the Flames should be doing based on what you know.
If the candidate hits the check marks on all of those, you hire, you don't need to hear from the other guys, especially if this was the guy who was top of your list all along based on resume. You don't risk losing him to Van or elsewhere if he comes in answered the will he fit in questions.
