Cammalleri has NOT been traded. Upd: Cammalleri likely heading to free agency
It's a long shot to work but here's the only pitch I could see Burke trying on cammy:
You want to go to a contender but you also want to hit a home run on your last chance at another big contract... Problem is that the contenders are all so close to the cap that they can't afford to spend as much on you.
How about this? We offer you a 3 year deal for $6.5 per year with a no-trade clause. Approaching the next trade deadline, if you are unhappy with where the team is at and want to be traded, come to me with a list of teams and we'll make it happen this time. We'll be able to get more for you cause we'll retain a big chunk of your cap hit and you'll be more than a rental player. Plus we've established from this year's trade deadline that we want value for you and you showed after the deadline that you're worth it. One of the contenders is going to get knocked out in the first round this year and they're going to tell themselves that they should have gone after cammy cause he would have made the difference in the series... They won't make the same mistake next year.
If everything goes right, you'll get more money and get to pick amongst the true contenders half-way through the season instead of guessing on July 1st which teams will be good next year. I know you can easily pick Pitts do be a contender but a lot can happen early in a season... Crosby and malkin could get injured 2 weeks in and they'll be battling just to make the playoffs the rest of the year.
Ideally we would love for us to be in a playoff spot next year and keep you through the whole contract cause you're a valuable player to us and to the development of the kids.

Anaheim can easily afford a big contract for Cammy. They ditched Penner and Selanne is retiring. They also have Koivu and Hiller coming off the books.

I agree with this post, however if, a big if, Iggy wins the cup I'd rather send this offer his way.

Hudler is much stronger on the puck. He also brings the type of leadership to the team that the Flames desperately need. Who was it that took in Monahan? Who was it that asked to play with Gaudreau and Arnold when it was announced they were signed? Hudler is the type of guy that does all those little things you hope your young kids emulate. Hudler is a keeper. The Flames may miss Cammy's offense but hopefully between Baertschi and Gaudreau they pick up the slack.

Right now, the veteran IS removed. The vet doesn't NEED to be removed. IS. For the time being.
The question is, how to fill that hole going forward?
Re-sign Cammy to his demanded price and term, whatever that may be?
Leave that spot vacant and allow a dog fight for it?
Or find a temporary plug to fill the hole until someone is ready?
But to go on about a rookie being handed the spot is nonsense and isn't going to happen.
If a rookie comes out of the dogfight and get the top6 spot, whether we think they are ready or not, is quite possible and isn't necessarily wrong.
The NHL is getting younger.. Deal with it.
|
Agree, he IS removed. But the choice is to replace him or not. The argument not to replace him (or re-sign him safe diff) with a veteran player remains the same. Many on here suggest you don't replace Cammy to "make room". Bad idea.
One the Flames likely HAVE to either re-sign or replace him to hit the cap floor. But even if that wasn't the case, you want the youngsters competing for the spot and pushing vets out.
"The NHL is getting younger" is such a catch phrase that means nothing really. While true, it's getting younger because IMPACT YOUNG players have proven they are the better option than the vets that are the alternative option. Youth for the sake of youth is useless. Youth that is capable of legitimately being the best option for you club because there aren't any veterans out there who can do it better is the way to win and have continued success in this league. Playing young players that couldn't win their spots against veteran options is not the way you win in this league, that's just being young for the sake of it.

The team needs a loyal desirable veteran the team can keep trading at the deadline and re-signing in the summer a la Tkachuk in St. Louis.

Thing is they could have had Cammy for a second at deadline but chose not to. Murray worked with Burke and probably shares his vision of big teams, so while they have room, I don't see Cammy to Anaheim. Rather, Murray will circle back to Kesler like he did at the deadline.

This is why I think Cammy's representatives are going to be surprised by the contracts which may or may not be offered on the free market. The offer currently on the table from the Flames could very well be the best offer he receives.

I think the reason they didn't trade for Cammy was due to the fact they were all in on Kesler until the deadline.
I see Cammy chasing a cup or the big contract. Florida is apparently goin to load up on vets to take a run at the playoffs. He could end up going to a team loke St.Louis who still lack a pure sniper as well
If Calgary ups their offer he might stay. Personally I fine work him staying but no way should it be 5x5 that deal will come back to bite sooner than later

Cammy got hot to the end the season, but he's not moving the needle tremendously. A healthy Glencross will score the same amount that Cammy scored this year.
He's a streaky scorer...when he's going he wins the team games,but when he's struggling he's easily replaceable.

If it wasn't for Cammy we probably would have finished second last and would have won the lottery. Thanks Cammy!!!

Who was the player who saw Gaudreau and Arnold sitting on the bench and actually went up to sit with them and take the time to talk, get to know the players.
Both Hudler and Cammalleri are good players and by all accounts good people. They're both streaky offensively and leave you wanting more at times.

Cammalleri is not part of the long term solution. A valuable guy in the room from all accounts, might be good to bridge gap until rookies take over, but if he can get 3 or more years, no way he takes the likely 1 or 2 year deal the Flames are in the position to offer.
If Hudler is traded, it does make it easier to keep Cammalleri around, but trading Hudler just to re-up Cammalleri for longer than he will benefit the team is not a good strategy

Pittsburgh was in on Kesler but that didn't stop them from getting Goc and stempniak. Anaheim could have closed on cammy but they chose not to.
With Etem, Palmieri and Silvferberg on the rise they will probably pass on a diminutive but effective winger

Chose not to at the trade deadline. Doesn't mean they won't at UFA when they won't need to move assets to do it.

Flames are only trading their best point getter for another 50-60 point player. I can't see any team offering that, so Hudler will most likely be back.

Yeah, what are the Flames going to trade Hudler for another David Jones?
In that case I'll stick with the guy who is a good offensive player and displays good hockey sense in all three zones. Sure he's small, but his contract is reasonable, and with only 2 more years has a nice workable amount of term left on it. Cammalleri is a better pure goal scorer, but in terms of overall game, Hudler and Cammalleri are pretty close at this point in their careers.

Hudler is not stronger on the puck. I never saw anyone get knocked off the puck so regularly.
