Awful tragedy, absolutely senseless loss of life. For what? A girl?

Just stupid.

1% raise an insanity defence and even less are successful- thus, yes, it is VERY uncommon.

People who are diagnosed with a mental illness like schizophrenia are, get this, schizophrenic.

Faking mental illness to get commited so you can, in the future, kill someone is a pretty ridiculous thought and not related to the article you linked.

Anyway, sad day... It affects so many... so senseless.

I would say that qualifies as uncommon.

After reading 17 pages of what is mostly nonsense, I'd like to thank the few of those in here who actually decided to avoid consistent speculation, degradation, or assumption of any of those involved with such a tragic event. I understand we are all curious and speculative beings by nature, but this isn't about us. It's not about our need to understand. It's not about whether or not the University has a daytime Beer Gardens. It's not about good vs evil, or utterly uninformed (and offensive) opinions on mental health. It isn't about alcohol or hallucinogenics. It isn't about whether or not someone is the son of a cop. It's about the five people who died in a horrible tragedy. Thanks to our desire to understand and seek answers, we so often end up forgetting about the victims and spend our time on 'what went wrong'.

Let the facts come in, but at the end of the day, don't immortalize the murderer. Remember the victims.

Here are some more pictures and information in the incident, I know some want to avoid in speculation, but it's just a summary of where everything is at right now.

Police Chief Rick Hanson told the media in a press conference that he was an invited guest to the party. When he was there, he obtained a knife, he also brought "an instrument" from work but primarily used a knife he obtained at the scene and targeted his victims. He had just left his job at Safeway where he works as a produce clerk before going to the party.
Definitely premeditated if he brought something with him from work to the party.

Is Bermuda Shorts Day a Calgary thing? I asked a few of my buddies who went to University's in Edmonton, and none of them had heard about it til today. It seems like it's common knowledge on here though, so maybe it's just not an Edmonton thing.

Yeah, U of A doesn't really have anything like that. They have tried to have beer gardens on the last day of classes, but it has never had the success that BSD does.

I really, and I mean really wish Peter12 would stop posting in this thread. I don't know what he's trying to go for, but whatever it is it's really ill-informed and annoying. Especially considering the thread and how fresh the event is.

If you want to start some intellectual debate where you play the contrarian for ****'s and giggles because you think you're smarter than everyone, maybe start another thread. I'm sure people will be more than happy to engage you there. In here, there's something a little more tragic and newsworthy being discussed.

The age of the victims is pretty important to release early. It calms the fears of thousands of people who have a friend or relative at U of C. They also probably prevent a ton of calls to the police inquiring about people who have their phones turned off.

I've been in a couple harrowing situations. I know I freeze while I'm realizing what's going on, then take off.
Unless he caught them all alone I find this hard to believe. People freak out when stuff happens. If just a single person starts yelling people will run for safety.

Just extremely weird and sad.

I find it weird too. I just watched the news and it said victims had multiple stab wounds I'd think it would be hard to stab 5 people multiple times unless he got them all alone.

Don't know what goes through people's heads

Thoughts are with the families of the victims

My thoughts & condolences go out to the victims families, the pain they're going through right now must be unimaginable.

The accused victim went to St Francis High School and I do have a few of mutual friends with him, they are absolutely stunned and can't wrap their head around what happened.

The victims (including a couple that have not named yet) also went to my high school in the same grad class as myself. I did not know them on a personal level at all, but I did know who they are, it's been an extremely difficult day for some of my friends that did know these people well.

It's such an uneasy feeling I can't really put it into words..

Really? People dying at BSD would be news to me. Any links or info? Curious, as I've never heard of anything.

Why is that? I give my head a shake at todays kids because they seem to need weapons to feel tough, House party scraps have been happening since the term house has been used but stabbings at them are becoming less rare. Back in the day fights were very common but lasted 5 minutes and it was back to partying, hell, I remember people using crazy glue to stop the bleeding on cuts to knuckles

I don't even mind saying it, Kids today are wimps, they don't know what a good scrap is and when they loose they get all sucky and seek a weapon thinking they can actually win that way.

At 43 I beat the piss out of this 22 year old muscle bound punk because he jumped threw my sunroof being an idiot in a parking lot. As the cops were dragging him away his ######ed girlfriend told me I better hide because he's going to cut me up like a rare steak when he gets out.

Just stupid!

My grandparents live on that street, I slept there almost every school night and must have walked past that house hundreds of times. Came to find out this morning that my cousin and her boyfriend were at that house but left early. It will be interesting to see what happens with BSD now, you could tell the administration was getting fed up with it by moving from Friday to Thursday to Monday's now. I always liked it and felt that it was pretty much the only cool event associated with the place but it's hard not to associate this tragedy with it from now on. I would bet that if not cancelled BSD will be severely restrained next year.

Because this wasn't a regular guy trying to act tough.

This was premeditated murder by the sounds of it.

All generations had their guys acting tough with weapons, And that isn't a new thing.
