I'd say the likely 'bad trip' was from alcohol.

Anyway, people are free to party as they please, but 12+ hours of drunken debauchery often has a bad outcome. Like it or not, this puts some heat on U of C, regardless of whether it occurred off campus.

I hope the U of C does address this, but like I said in an earlier post, if the U of C shuts down BSD or reins it in, there will be plenty of place off campus that will jump at the chance to pull in more money.
It is hard to out the genie back in the bottle.

Just terrible, and its close to home as I lived in that area while attending U of C and was one of those BSD partiers just a few years ago.
I remember hosting a house party in fourth year and some "friends of friends" showed up. We proceeded to kick these guys out after they tried to steal an iPod, and 30 minutes later they come back and start a massive brawl. Luckily they didn't have knives or anything, but you never know what drunk aggressive idiots are going to do.

I think the link between this stabbing and BSD is tenuous at best. If this happened last weekend it would just be "stabbing at a house party".

This happened off campus.
The U of C doesn't need to change anything.
What needs to change - society.

That's a fair comment. It's only in the last 5-10 years that society has turned violent.

The murderer in last years Brentwood stabbing was a woman, and she was just found guilty.

I often wonder if there is a "kids these days" problem. It seems there's been a "kids these days" problem for decades, while violent crime tends to trend downward. It's quite possible this is a tragic outlier.

I don't think it's the responsibility of the university. The U of C sanctioned portion of BSD typically ends at 5:00pm. This incident happened much, much later off-campus. It's no different than someone getting hammered at a Flames game and choosing to go out after and keep drinking for hours after instead of going home. If that person went and killed someone hours later, would the Flames be responsible?

Awful tragedy. I think some of you pulling the "what is wrong with kids these days/back in my day" stuff need to give your heads a shake.

People gather at a Flames game for the purpose of watching a hockey game. The Calgary Flames do not attempt to create a culture of booze filled chaos at the game. I would estimate an incredibly small percentage of people go to the games with the intention of getting absolutely blitzed. BSD on the other hand, exists so that students can get wasted at an official event on campus. Forgive me if I am wrong, but I don't believe there are other events during BSD that don't revolve around alcohol? Thinking it will end at 5pm, just because U of C closes all campus activities, is naive. They have created a culture around this day that involves mass drunkenness and stupidity

Why?
Violent crimes have been going on for years, but only recently has it seemed to ramp up, especially in the last 10 years or so - especially with knives. More stories like this have have been coming out.

I went to University in the 90s, was there this much drinking and partying on BSD day?
Maybe I just wasn't hip or maybe I was busy studying!
I heard they blocked off Lot 32 for it? That never happened when I was there (that I knew of).
Not saying what's wrong with kids today cause if we were presented with the same opportunities, we'd be the same.

I was actually on campus yesterday and was considering joining the festivities.
This is tragic. Have they released the names yet?
Regardless of it being done in the wee hours of the night and not on campus, it is going throw light onto UofC and how they respond to the incident. BSD actually seemed tamer than usual yesterday around campus. I was at Jamesons at 5.00-5.30pm and I was expecting the surrounding area to be crazy after the beer gardens closed.

That was a quick way to crash a party. Ever since then I've been more selective on who I invited to my parties, and where I go too as well.

Wouldn't the lesson here be, watch out for who you share the house with?

Every statistic disagrees with what you're saying. Violent crime is down across the board.

I didn't say violent crime is increasing, re-read my post. I suggested this type of incident seems more commonplace at house parties now.
