Winston Wolf: I would definitely take Hedberg over Kiprusoff. Kiprusoff was horrible last year when Nabokov held out. I saw a lot of their games and I honestly didn't see anything out of Kiprusoff to make me think he could ever be a starting goaltender. On the other hand, Toskala was very good, if I were Calgary I wouldn't have settled on Kiprusoff.

it is fun to go back and resurrect these threads to see the silly things people wrote or to see how wrong most of us probably were.

It's so smug to do that though, I don't think anyone expected Kipper to be what he was. Having a decade of hindsight to mock people is a pretty dick move.

Come into this thread and see comparisons to Kipper? Get real! Go back and look at what Shark fans thought of Kipper before he was ever dealt, they thought he would be a world class goalie. Who here saw anything to say Berra has potential to be a world class goalie? Berra has zero consistancy and he won't learn it at this stage either. He will be an adequate backup that can make some brilliant saves but will always let in those back breaking stinkers too. Glad he went to the Avs.

He doesn't need to be the next Kipper to be worth a 2nd round pick. The value of a 2nd round pick, especially a late one, is being exaggerated by a few people (Kiprusoff should not be looked at as the benchmark here).

Actually, it's more smug to state opinions as facts, which so many people do nowadays.

I have to laugh at people comparing Kipper to Berra.
Where did this idea that Berra had success in other leagues come from? He was borderline terrible in the Swiss A league. He waas good in a short stint in the AHL and garbage in the NHL.
He just isn't very good. He is Henrik Karlsson 2.0, except Karlsson only got us a 7th, which is what a sane GM should have paid for Berra.

Hartley said he was the kind of goalie that would lug bad swiss teams into the playoffs on his back.

The second rounder we gave up for Kipper was conditional. Don't remember the conditions but if he struggled, it would've been a 3rd rounder.
There are no conditions on the pick we received from the Avs. So when/if he sucks, we still get their 2nd rounder

My favorite as well Funny how things work out sometimes -- although I don't know if Kipper would have been as successful in Vancouver; Marcoux deserves some credit in helping Kipper reach his potential.

Can you imagine Kipper as a canuck... Bone chilling.
Nice quote from this Sharks fan:
"You guys got a gem in Kipper. Of the Sharks 3 goalies this year, I think Mikka has the best stuff. I figured that Calgary would be his destination and I expect him to show the league how good of a goalie he really is. I know Ill be checkin the Flames boxscores more often."

Not really a direct comparison. Kiprusoff started playing in NA when he was 23, was playing in his third partial NHL season, and had already finished a couple of very successful years in the AHL. I suppose Berra could turn out to be a top goalie, but I wouldn't count on it. Is he on track to be a NHL starting goalie? In the end, it is really too hard to say one way or the other.

I seem to recall Marcoux arriving after Kipper. Regardless I dont think he could have contributed much to Kipper's early success, the guy was on fire as soon as he put on the Flaming C.
I think a big part of Kipper's success can be attributed to his own skill and Sutter's system. Turek was having a good season too that year and everyone can see how the Kings are now.
You put a great goalie with Sutter's system and you will be one of the best defensive teams in the league.

Berra not having a great start in Colorado, pulled against the Sharks after letting in 2 goals in 5 shots.
