For every Kipper there are 30 goalies who continue to suck after getting a shot.

That's not the point. The point is you can't write someone off after 28 games.

Are people seriously trying to compare Berra to Kipper? They were both 27 year old European goalies traded for a 2nd round pick. That is all.
Kipper started in the much tougher Finnish league then had two good seasons in the AHL. He followed that up by getting 14 regular season wins and a playoff win with the Sharks. I know Berra has 9 wins (1 in regulation) and Kipper had a bad 02-03 season but the Flames got a more valuable and proven goaltender for their 2nd round pick than the Avs got for theirs.

I will also add that when Calgary traded for Kipper they were incredibly desperate for a goalie after Turek (who wasn't even that good) got hurt. Giving up a 2nd round pick was a good risk to take as it filled an immediate need and there was potential he could turn into a starter.
I don't see the same logic from the Avs. They already have Varlamov who is younger than Berra and will be their starter for years. They need backup insurance for this year in case Giguere gets hurt and will need a back up next year but these needs could have been met by giving up a lower pick this year and making a similarly priced free agent signing next year.
The only reason I can think to trade a 2nd round pick for Berra is that Colorado feels they have enough good young players at the moment and no longer place a high value on their draft picks.

...I'm not saying he'll be Kiprusoff, or anything close. I'm saying it's ridiculous to write off a 27 year old goalie who has lots of success in other leagues after less then 30 games.

Wow, those are some ugly numbers. Wonder what CP's reaction was to that trade.

I was wondering what your qualifications are to make such a damning statement.
I can't say myself if Berra has specific holes in his game, I don't have the knowledge.

This is puckluck you're talking to. Berra sucks and plucky knows he sucks. Heck, he'll make a bet with you, that Berra will never improve.

Just imagine if Berra played for team Canada!

I distinctly remember thinking a second rounder seemed a little steep for a guy I'd never heard of. Had it been a third rounder or less, I wouldn't have thought anything about it at all.
As for Berra, he seems to have all the physical tools to be a very good goalie, he just tends to overreact positionally and may lose mental focus from time to time. If they can get him to work on these aspects of his game, this may prove a decent trade for the Avs. Even if Berra pans out though, it was still a trade the Flames could afford to make. Hopefully they get something decent with the return.

Kipper had also had success in the NHL in other years. That wasn't his entire resume.

If we turn our 2nd rounder into Vlasic like San Jose did with the 2nd rounder we gave up I'd be extremely happy.

I think Berra will get better as he gets more NHL experience, maybe put up a 2.7-3.00 GAA in his career, but never worth a 2nd rounder. I think we'll always know that we won this trade.

To be fair Kipper never laid an egg his first season with the Flames while Berra managed one in his first start for the Avs. That OT goal was embarrassingly bad and one wonders if he will ever be able to overcome his brutal positioning at times.

That picture has me laughing so hard. I think that was a pull the goalie moment that went south quick before he had made it to the bench, so he raced back.
