I'm probably too center obsessed lately but having Monahan - Bennett/Reinhart/Draisatl - Backlund down the middle would be a dream.

Welcome.
Except I'm leaning harder to the Sammy/Monahan combo. The more I hear and see of Bennett though, the more I like him.

But the more I hear about him, the more I think he will be out of our range.
I will be surprised if we draft higher than 5 this year.

5 - Calgary - 59pts - 16GR
6 - Carolina - 65pts - 17GR

Today's relevant games:

I'm thinking we go 1/3 on the OOT tonight, with Carolina winning.

The equation for me is changing as the season goes on. Watching the Edmonton scenario, the Vancouver scenario, when compared to the Flames scenario I think it comes down to the following.
the given
Value of 4/5 pick < Value of Picks 1-3
the wild card of impact on culture/foundation
Value of strong finish > Value of tanking
Starting to think ...
(Value of strong finish > Value of tanking) > (Value of 4/5 pick < Value of Picks 1-3)
or Draisatl and Flames finish with a positive vibe may be more important than say Reinhart and winning only one of their last 9

For the curious, a look at how bloody difficult it'll be for anyone to move in the bottom 5 of the standings. http://flamesnation.ca/2014/3/13/rac...ne-month-to-go

I would say this is altered by how losses happen, not just losses. If the Flames play a lot of 1 goal games like they have all year, losses still aren't fun, but they're not drubbings which would do more to add to a losing culture imo.

I totally agree except one small caveat. I don't think specifically W/L matter as much as play. Play the right way and the Ws likely come, but the W isn't the goal. If we keep teams below 30 shots, outshoot more than we get outshot, have decent goaltending and have a strong PK, that would still keep that vibe going. Add in some strong rookie performances and even a 1-8 finish would feel right

Trying to tell myself that but I honestly don't believe the sour taste from finishing bottom 3 has an effect on the culture. It didn't negatively effect Chicago, Pittsburgh, Anaheim, or LA.
Summer comes, the players forget the past, and it's a brand new year.

As much as I love Monahan I have a hard time believing that the Flames are better off with their supposed strong finish and Monahan over the Avs clear tank and MacKinnon.
The talk of hard work and "winning culture" is nice and all but elite level talent is what wins in the NHL and all the winning culture does nothing to beat better teams.

Do you have the split of how much the 6th overall is from a team below winning the lottery and actually finishing 6th?

Prime example in Colorado. Gets MacKinnon, next season challenging for the presidents trophy.

What do you propose they do? The coach/players aren't going to lose/tank on purpose. They are dressing a team that is virtually 40% rookies.

Who said they have to do anything?
I am saying I would prefer the 1st overall pick even if it means loses over finishing "strong" and getting the 5th pick.

Well then if this is the case why don't we just settle the Stanley Cup using some sort of math formula to determine elite level talent.
I'm sorry you are right moon elite level talent does help with wins in the NHL, but the game has so many more intangibles such as hard work and winning culture attached to it.
