There are multiple sources that stated the plane only transmitted to Rolls Royce twice, once during take off and once during ascent. None of them have the clout of the Wall Street Journal, but there's no actual reference in the WSJ article. It just says it with no attributed quotes or sources.

I know there are no sources to the WSJ article (yet) but view them far more credible then others like Fox News, or the Sun, et al, and think there is still lots of truth to their article if they were willing to go full front page with the story. RR and Boeing have not refuted anything said by WSJ. They just haven't commented...yet.

Rolls Royce Holdings which does the aerospace, marine, and industrial applications what's left from the original company.

Rolls Royce Motors which makes the cars (and what most people associate with the name) as a brand was sold off to Volkswagon and then to BMW a long time ago.

That would explain the lack of data.
I have a stupid question. There is wifi on the plane right? Outside of a sudden explosion, are there not at least some people on phones or laptops and if there there was even a hint of trouble such as a hijacking wouldn't a message have been sent out on chinese social media? Anything from QQ, WeChat, Weibo to texting. Even instagram, someone could sneak a picture and upload it. Kids are fast with phones these days. Can text a message in 3 seconds.

Very few planes have WiFi, it's very rare. This flight did not. Why did you think there was WiFi?

As cynical as I am, I still don't think people would be tweeting their impending death.

I bet that, if the means existed, people would try and get the word out somehow. Maybe not twitter, but you never know! Even with 9/11 all those years ago, people attempted to make contact with the outside world and some actually got messages through.

Obviously, the distance from cell towers, lack of wifi, etc. in the Malaysian flight suggests that this wasn't possible. If it was, I'm sure that some on the plane would have texted, messaged, called, etc. someone.

yeah, but in 9/11 they had time, considerable time and they didn't know they were crashing. I think if it's a sudden disaster and you're going down and realizing you're about to die, I just can't see how someone would do it.

But who knows.

The haystack just got a lot bigger...

US Officials Have 'Indication' Malaysia Airline Crashed into Indian Ocean

Quote:
U.S. officials have an "indication" the missing Malaysia Airlines jetliner may have crashed in the Indian Ocean and is moving the USS Kidd to the area to begin searching.

It will take another 24 hours to move the ship into position, a senior Pentagon official told ABC News.

"We have an indication the plane went down in the Indian Ocean," the senior official said.

The official said there were indications that the plane flew four or five hours after disappearing from radar and that they believe it went into the water.

not if it was a sudden disaster but it was a hijacking or robbery, with wifi someone could quickly get the word out.
