Leadership starts at the top, from behind the bench outward. The best leaders in the game aren't the best unless they have a top notch coaching staff behind them. Glad the Flames finally have that again and I hope Bob can continue to be that guy as the team improves. It was the one key thing missing from previous years. No leadership from behind the bench. Playfair, Keenan, Brent Sutter, garbage.
Shame Hartley's first year was cut in half and he didn't have a training camp or practice days at all during the season.

You know, if you think that all NHL teams do it basically all the time then maybe the issue isnt with the effort the players are putting in but with your expectations.

I agree with the part that Hartley has the team playing hard, for the most part, and competing. What I have to disagree with, is people claiming that the team achieved something.
They were predicted to be a lottery team, that's what they are. Some players are playing better than expected, others are worse. They are not overachieving as a team.

Another underrated upside is that the players we draft will want to play here. They're probably breathing a sigh of relief that Edmonton passed them by. The coaching system works, the draftees know that they're integral to the future, and they will know to earn their ice time and maintain a good work discipline. Excellent locker room attitudes with McGrattan (who the kids know got their back), Galiardi. Captain worthy of the C.
I can't see any Tom Erixons in our future.

With how poorly the Iginla, Kipper and Bouw situation was handled and how thin we were looking at the beginning of the year I'd say we overachieved. Figured we were going to be dead last and lose many games 10-0 and that's not the case at all.

Who said teams do it all the time?
I think every team in the NHL no shows a game every now and then.
82 games is a long season and even though travel is better teams don;t go 100% all the time.

Is there a team in the league that could lose their best F(2?), best D, and best G ....getting virtually nothing for them that has helped this season and actually perform better?

Who is performing better?
This Flames team is just as bad as it was last year.

And you don't think that's at least a little impressive given the loss of the franchise's best skater, goaltender and #1 defenseman?
They should be a bottom two team in the league. On paper, this is still probably the weakest team in the NHL. But it isn't, and they aren't.

I watch the opposing teams feeds and the commentators often say that we are in very good shape and that everyone in the league respects our work ethic. What else could you expect from this team? Finishing above 20th would be a damn miracle, no real starting goalie and an AHL team making nearly every game competitive is impressive.

They are pretty much where everyone expected them to be, but it's how they got there that is the difference.
This isn't a team that gets run 4-0 and quits on a regular basis like the Oilers of the last 5 or so years have (and like many of us here probably thought they would be).
The Flames have had their ups and downs, but the games are usually entertaining and pretty close for a roster that has no real business being in most games giving the young players exposure to what real NHL compete levels are like.
It's the best case scenario we could have hoped for... They're bad enough to be in the mix for important draft picks, but competitive to ensure a good culture moving forward.

You can't remove Tavares out of the equation at this point. They had him in the line-up up until the the Olympic break, and they were still sucking then.

Sure but when they had Tavares they were ahead if the Flames. Now that he is out they are a threat to our draft position.

JMO Hartley is not the reason the Flames are near the basement.
Until ownership is willing to spend on some complimentary quality FA's the rebuild results will be much the same next year.

Oh....just picture Galiardi yapping at his teammates on the bench. General idea.

Huh
Much the same next year as in playing hockey that's got fans interested? High level of compete and heart?
Where you headed with that bro

where am I headed to. Are sh##ing me we are going to be in the bottom 5 of the league.
That's fine for this season with all the youth. But this offseason Burke needs to go shopping if Ownership will allow it.
As a STH you can't find buyers for games unless it is a big ticket team.
I certainly do not want to go through next season losing losing losing. Contrary to what you think they are not fun games to be at.
I was at the LA game and the dome was half empty from all the fans that left when the Flames scored their first goal.
Just like what happened at least 25 times this season. So let me guess the paying fans at the dome are not being good loyal fans, right bro.
Sure this team shows heart and this season we knew that we would be right near the bottom with the other teams that have very little depth.
So is your plan to have ownership bring in no FA's and run with idiots like Butler again.
Rebuilding a team that has the playoffs eventually in mind is not going to happen without FA's mixed in with the youth.
It is fine to roll out more and more AHL players because this season is a wash out but is that what you want again next year and the next after that...
You don't want to see Ownership improve the roster in the offseason if they can via much needed FA's or via trade.
I do I know a number of long time fans that we talk to at games STH that will not so easily hand over their thousands if they do not see improvement.
And yes I realize the Hothouse members will scoop them up and for ownership the beat will go on. But the fans deserve then chance at playoffs and that can only be sped up with rebuilding through drafting, prospects, youth and yes that dirty word. Free Agent's have to be in the mix. Bro

Sorry brah
I was at the LA game and also left after Cammy's goal, mostly because my brother basically came along after someone else backed out and he was ready to leave (Oilers fan, can't choose family). I only get to about 5-6 games a season on average. I realize that's not a STH level commitment, but I live in Blackfalds, approx 90 min commute each way, which means tacking meals and often accommodation onto the cost if I decide to ride the heroin beer roller coaster.
Maybe I'm just a homer, but I've enjoyed every game I've been to lately a lot more than seeing the same overpaid vets treading water.
We've put up with this, what's the rush to rip the bandage off and limit long term potential. Just my two, brah.

I'm all for seeing what exactly the Flames have for prospects for this season but I don't want to be finishing near the bottom doing this for even another 2 years.
It will be interesting to see how patient fans truly will be with a rebuild, I don't think we should be expected to settle for basement results they are not basement prices.
