I always thought we could use more towers. Like protection devices from when the giants step on our land.

Most towers are hidden in now. My protest would be to make sure it's not a massive eyesore monstrosity. I like that evergreen tree picture. That's a good idea. A lot of church steeples are cell towers. Micro cells are placed all over the city by Rogers. There is no need to build a massive structure (There's a penis joke here somewhere) like the 80's towers anymore.

I've never thought cell towers were that ugly in the first place. I mean, they're not awesome looking, I'll give you that. But for me, they always just blend in with all the othe stuff, so I barely even notice it.

I think they should put some bright, flashing neon lights on it to make it look classy.

To be fair I thought the same thing when I read your post.

Perhaps if you said "my years of working in the telecommunications industry" in your post......

I still don't see how working in the telecom industry for 10+ years puts you in a unique position to state that Telus is proably doing this because it's cheaper than putting it on a mall roof.

Anyone who has a basic understanding of how money works could probably have figured that one out.

I thought it was funny that you made an irrelevant statement (that you apparently understand telus very well), to support a completely obvious conclusion (that cost is likely a factor in the location of the tower).

Growing up, I used to love the Air Raid sirens that were on some of the School grounds, and public parks. I thought they looked neat. When I went to Willow Park elementary, the Air Raid Siren was always home base in capture the flag games. These were way more gaudy than cell phone towers, and people managed just fine, and didn't have little tantrums when they went up.

Eckville has one that still goes off daily, I think it goes off at 9pm every night.

Same here, in the off chance I somehow end up driving through Woodbine in the next 10 or 15 years, and in the less likely chance I switch to Telus from Rogers, I want to make sure I might have coverage. Gotta future proof my cell phone coverage. I might go back and vote 5 more times to be sure.

Light it up nicely and give it some interesting name (ie. Shaft of Destiny), and I think this could actually look like a nice piece of public art.

Cell coverage in that area and as far south as Evergreen is pretty awful, so I like this. Too bad they didn't put it in when I still lived there

Used to live in woodbine as well.Me and my buddy had rogers and my other buddy had Telus never had issues, that park is perfect for a Cell tower though big open field with nothing.

Look the map you just posted. Two of those 5 you listed aren't Telus towers, now look to the south and to the west just a bit, it's a big gaping hole of no cell tower until you're south of Fish Creek blvd past 37th st.

The athletic park is just a big open green space with a couple ball diamonds and a hockey rink IIRC, a moderately sized cell tower isn't going to affect a thing. Residents will barely notice it, it will just be in the backround. It's not affecting their views of anything.

NIMBY dbags

Ok, if you wont accept Shantz's point about money, how about a basic understanding of construction? Do you think that you can just go putting something like that on the roof of a 30 year old building? You can't not bring up money, because it's not free to get a flat roof like that re-engineered and then upgraded, to support something like that.

And besides, wouldn't that just put the tower another 30 feet higher in the air, and thus make it even more of an eyesore?

5 star thread indeed. (credit to KG for that phrase)

It's just 2 ball diamonds, a soccer field (can be used as 2,) and a ####load of empty space

Some might call it a prime location for a necessary cell tower

This "eyesore" will fit right in with the kicked in fences along 24th, the shattered bus shelters on every corner, and the graffiti on most buildings and alleys
