St-Louis is extremely underrated. One of the most consistently effective offensive players in the last 15 years of the league.
Callahan would be viewed as a mid-tier player if he was anywhere but New York all these years. I love him and think he is elite for what he does but the money he was asking for completely completely ludicrous.

When I hear this and consider the Tim (Tom) Erixon situation, and how much the Rangers gave up in both of these trades when they clearly had the leverage, it makes me think the Rangers have their mitts in everything and that the league will keep an arms length as long as the Rangers offer a fair trade value in return.

I was thinking the same thing. In both situations they over pay to maybe appease the other club so tampering isn't brought up.

St Louis will probably be the next ageless wonder. There's no way Callahan outscores him next season unless St. Louis drops dead.

Ha! I think what we've just seen is that if Yzerman had named Stamkos Captain instead of St. Louis little Marty would have stamped his feet and picked up his ball and gone home a long time ago.
I'm betting the 'C' was basically a bribe to keep him around a bit longer.

Not sure that TB is 'much worse' that they were though - Callahan is a very good player that will help TB in different ways.

I think a big part of why we differ is we likely have different views of Callahan. He is a good 3rd line guy that brings a lot of positive things for team but for the money he is asking and limited offensive potential I don't think he makes any sense as the key (or at least a big piece) to get back.
I also like the deal for TB if they are out of the play-offs and moving MSL. Then I agree it is a great return but in their current state I don't think it makes much sense as I think they have less of a chance to win the SC than they did prior to the trade deadline. Of course MSL asking out does out them in a bind.

Yup - I think he is a lot more than a 3rd line guy.

Third line is likely a little harsh for him. He is a very good 3rd liner/weak 2nd liner.
If you have guys with offensive skill that can carry him he likely can fit in the top 6 of a team but he is not nearly skilled enough to be relied on for offense and not near good enough defensively/physically to make up for the lack of offensive ability.

2011: 48 pts
2012: 52 pts
2013: 31 pts (56 pt pace)
all while playing for Tortorella
those are not 3rd line numbers - nor are they weak 2nd line numbers. I would think that playing for TB, he should consistently put up 50 pt seasons (I would think MSL has only one more of those)
also, not good enough defensively? Callahan has one of the best 200 ft games in the NHL.

Martin St.Louis has the worst case of short man syndrome in the history of man kind.

I think this may be a deal that puts NYR into a serious contender. As the chemistry develops and their team gets healthy, look out for NYR

I'd like to see NYR succeed a little, like it when New York is excited about hockey.

He was getting top two PP time playing with guys like Richards, Gaborik, Nash and Stepan.
And others were able to score more than him on that team so it isn't like Tortarella stopped all offense from his guys.
I would not say he is near the top defensively but better than an average guy. My point was that he is not at a shutdown type level of a Bergeron, Datsyuk Selke type guy where his defense makes up for lack of offensive talent.
I have said in the past I think he is vastly overrated and his reported 6-7 million dollar salary demands (when at best he is 3, maybe 4 million dollar guy) may have made me even more biased against him.
I would also think MSL may outscore Callahan's next two season's next year alone and has likely a decent 2015-16 season in him.

I just get the impression he seemed slighted by the captaincy decision going to Giordano.

I'm not seeing that out of Glencross. I dont think he was ever seriously in contention for the Captaincy.

Is there anything that is based on other than a feeling?
I am tired of Glencross' pouting and lazy shifts out there but I haven't seen anything that points to him being slighted or angry about the Captaincy.
