Makes sense that this is all about the team Canada selections. Very good explanation as to why Yzerman wants nothing to do with it anymore too.

McKenzie on TSN radio says that MSL asked to be moved out of Tampa 3 or 4 times in the last 3 years.
If true, one thing you can say about MSL, is that he never let his unhappiness with being in Tampa affect his play on the ice.

This is the first Lose-Lose trade I've seen in the NHL in quite some time.
Yzerman did well considering the situation though.

Lose lose?
Yzerman got a really solid player, a 1st and a 2nd that could become a 1st, for a 38 year old.
In a few years, people are going to be talking about how ridiculous this trade was for TB.

To me it looks lopsided right now. For a guy who has been asking for a trade for 5 years and refuses to go ANYWHERE else you think Sather could have negotiated a better deal for himself.

I think St. Louis' point totals are going to fall significantly in NY

^Agreed.
I understand the appeal of NYC but not sure why the NYR continue to attract big name players. Seems like these guys sign or ask for a trade to NYR for reasons other than hockey and they are never as good. The management is also ruthless and not afraid to get rid of these guys and buy them out early in their contracts.

agreed - I think he's a 50 point guy next year.
in fact (assuming they re-sign Callahan - I think they will), I would bet that Callahan gets more points than MSL next year, or at least comparable

It sounds like in each case, MSL only gave NYR as a destination. Brian Lawton had mentioned that some ex Tampa staff were now employed by the Rangers and he suspected they had been talking to MSL. Once he discussed the issue with the league, the trade requests seemed to cool down for the time being.
When I hear this and consider the Tim (Tom) Erixon situation, and how much the Rangers gave up in both of these trades when they clearly had the leverage, it makes me think the Rangers have their mitts in everything and that the league will keep an arms length as long as the Rangers offer a fair trade value in return.

Don't forget about Brad Richards, in his final year in Dallas everyone seemed to think it was a forgone conclusion that he was going to sign with the Rangers.

Maybe someone else has already asked, but why in the world did they make him captain at the start of this season if he has been requesting trades for the last three years?

Seemed like the next qualified guy? I don't know. I don't understand why he would be asking for a trade, I thought he really, really liked Tampa Bay and I assumed he would be there for the rest of his career.
I agree with everyone else, I think his point totals are going to go down with a new team.

IMO,yes, it's lose-lose... Of course, the picks could end up being stellar and the Bolts are eventual winners in this trade ... But as of this moment, both teams are worse than they were prior.. Heading into the playoffs, neither team benefits here... The makeup of their respective rosters was better before the trade.

Solid players aren't great returns for elite players and TB in a weak East had a very good shot at at least going to ECF or Stanley Cup finals and now are much worse than they were before.
If the picks turn out like most 20ish picks people likely talk about how the Lightning got a 3rd line player and 2 months of Ryan meh Callahan for a Superstar.

The Rangers are better off than they were.
St. Louis is a much, much better player than Ryan Callahan

That is certainly a valid point
I am looking at it longer term, and I think the Rangers get (at most) 100 games from MSL. He is 38 and won't be elite for long.

First of all, I agree with the bold.
However there is hockey beyond this year, and TB got a massive return for a 38 year old (not just Callahan).
Not sure that TB is 'much worse' that they were though - Callahan is a very good player that will help TB in different ways.

St. Louis had points on 35% of Tampa's goals.
He was the major offensive catalyst for Tampa. They are much worse without him, at least for this season.

Hardly "qualified" if he wants out. Plus Stamkos was quite worthy.
