Burke got pretty damn good value for Berra considering what other rentals, especially goalies were going for.

Do you think Patrick Roy, the head coach, is actively starting trade discussions, or taking part in them with other teams at all?
I'm sure Sakic might bounce ideas and options with him but Roy isn't talking to other teams GM's, especially starting trade talks.

Comparing the Kiprusoff trade to this is ridiculous. Kiprusoff had struggled the year prior to the trade with San Jose but he had also shown the ability to play in the NHL the year before that and had dominated the AHL (924/926 save percentage in his two years in the AHL). Berra does not even have anywhere near the resume of Kiprusoff.
The Flames also acquired Kiprusoff because they needed a starter while Turek was hurt to avoid having to go with Jamie McLellan. I assume the Avs will keep Berra up rather than expose him to waivers but he's still going to be the 2nd/3rd goalie there.
I also believe even then that the pick was a conditional 2nd (not sure what the conditions were and they were obviously met)

No idea. I'm sure he puts his two cents in very much so though, IIRC he was the guy that made that Talbot -Downie deal and Sakic gave him the okay. Actually I'm pretty sure he can, he is the VP of hockey Operations.

Roy can and does make trades. It is part of his duties as VP of Hockey Operations. His position is pretty unique within the NHL. He is about as close as you get to having the dual role of Coach/GM right now.

Perhaps not, but I'm sure Patrick Roy, the Head Coach and Vice President of Hockey Operations, is.
Edit: Wow, am I ever slow.

A plus for me is that the Berra 2nd and our third are so close together that hopefully we can grab two highly rated guys who might slip a little bit.

So wait, why are there asterisks around the pick in the title again? It's not conditional is it?

I meant it could have been a steal for us, getting a 2nd round pick for Berra.
But consider this, it was part of the JBo trade...

I could have sworn O. Roy was Patrick's son.
You try to make a joke around here....

The Flames need to get more picks in the top 100. Ideally they would have 8 or 9 in that range in each of the next 3 years. We need to get more high end skill in the organization and that only gets there if you've got a lot of darts towards the top of the draft to try and hit the mark.

I much prefer to get higher picks, but we need more than the 7 total picks that we have now.
Chicago and LA stockpiled picks like hoarders in the period just after the lockout if I remember correctly.
They did alright.
Chicago had 10 picks in 03 (Seabrook, Crawford Byfuglien)
17 picks in 04 (Barker Bolland Bickell Brouwer)
12 in 05 (Hjalmarsson)
LA 10 in 07 (Simmonds, Martinez, King)
9 in 08 (Doughty, Voynov, Loktionov)
10 in 09 (Schenn, Clifford, Vey, Nolan)
