To be fair, his salary is less than 1/35th of next years cap, and it's not like they have any prospects beside their 1st overalls who can make an NHL roster ... even theirs.

If you assume that every move the oilers make is wrong you will be correct the large majority of the time.

St Louis has two starters, something could be in the works I suppose.

Yeah, I don't care about the salary, even if he is overpaid for what he does. The Oilers could possibly send him to the AHL, but that seems unlikely, so the concern for the team up north is how having him on the team hinders their ability to play anyone who might be better.
Sort of like our situation with Westgarth, even though the two players themselves aren't really directly comparable.

Here's the thing; the oilers just picked up a player that had just declined to sign there for more money.
How truly motivated would any player be to know that he is going to be somewhere for 3.5 years making less money when he didn't want to sign there in the first place?
This is terrible man management.
Is this the only 3rd/4th line player in the league making this salary that the oilers could have gotten? Someone who already declined to sign for more money for 4 years than he got? Keeping in mind, that we are talking about a 32 year old on likely his last contract, when he should be getting all that he can, and he still didn't want to go to the oilers?
I love the trade.

I liked/ respected a couple players on the oilers dubnyk, smid, and ryan Smyth ( smyth because he has been a classy player his entire career). With the last two moves they have made it so much easier for me to hate them.

Indicates that Pekka Rinne is ready to go. As soon as Dubnyk came to Nashville Carter Hutton stepped up his game big time.

Its funny that Edmonton's former starter is barely AHL quality now.
Chock up another career ruined by Edmonton.

Sabres beat writer saying Buffalo might so they can deal Halak without worrying about a backup coming back in return.

I imagine he will be claimed by someone. Probably go to the AHL

well, "barely AHL quality" is a bit of a stretch, he's only just going down now. He's 27 so there's still enough time (not too much though) to find his way back.
I can't hate the guy now that he's moved on from the oil, I hope more than anything that he gets it together and leads another team to a cup (yes, I am well aware that is hugely unlikely).

I would think so given the current goalie market, his low salary, and the fact that he would make for one of the better backups in the league
I could see a team who misses out on one of the good goalies trading for Dubnyk on wednesday if he clears

I'll drive Joey Mac out there for 1/3 of that.

Those two things can't happen. He will either be claimed, or he'll go to the AHL.
You can't claim a player and then send him to the AHL. That's why we don't see very many waiver claims.

Edmonton retained a good chunk of his salary in the trade, no?
