Well equipped unaffiliated troops are no longer unaffiliated. Russia admits the troops and amoured units are theirs
Quote:
Russian troops have moved into Crimea in what Moscow is calling a mission to “protect Black Sea Fleet’s positions” but which the Ukrainian government has denounced as an “armed intervention.”
The Russian foreign ministry said Friday that it had informed the Ukrainian government that armoured units from the Black Sea Fleet base near Sevastopol had entered Crimea in order to protect fleet positions.

I would assume right now that Putin has snuck enough soldiers and other assets into the Ukraine that he can now make that slow cranking motion with his left hand while slowly raising the middle finger on his right hand to the rest of the World.
Is this normal or related to what's happening in the Ukraine ? Doesn't sound normal to me.
I would also like to know if that is normal.
It sounds like a provocation to me. Would an armed American ship be welcome 200km off the coast of St. Petersburg... probably not. Perhaps it is something they do too though.
I agree that they can't appease Putin. There is a lot of territory that they would love to take (A LOT of the former S.S.Rs have significant Russian populations).
I didn't realize that Ukraine had a protection treaty with Britain and the US. I guess we will see what that is worth now. Having said that, has Britain and the US officially acknowledged the revolutionaries as the official government and do they inherit those treaties?

Russia does protect its bases for now...
Might be a good thing for Ukraine, if there isn't a war in place. Right now the daily life in Ukraine is a total mess because of increased criminal activity and border line civil war.

Not really normal because of the distance and the fact that except for Subs Russian naval vessels don't venture that far out.
But this was something that Putin had announced last year as part of an expanded military relationship with Cuba.
Is it a provocation? you bet it is, this is no different then the American's putting subs in international waters outside of the big Soviet naval bases in the Atlantic, or the American's parking a carrier battle group off the coast of Taiwan.
And the story is a bit incomplete, its not one ship, its a Russian fleet being led by their flag ship The Cruise Missile firing Cruiser Moskva, along with a anti submarine Destroyer and a tender ship, as well as what is classed by a electronic spy ship.
The Moskva carries the SS-N-12 Sandbox, designed to be a multi purpose land and ship attack cruise missile with a range of about 500 kms, it can either carry a nuclear or conventional payload.
Right now if this story is true, America is well within firing distance of a surface vessel, and its blatent too.
I figure that he figures that he has Obama against the ropes and he's gambling that Obama will back down and do nothing and he'll be able to restructure the balance of power in Europe to his favor.

Remember American missile submarines cruised the Atlantic well within range of Moscow with Nuclear tipped cruise missiles. Putin is just taking it up a notch

If Obama backs down, Japan will start building nukes, guaranteed

That would be an awesome but disconcerting sight to see. I remember a few years ago a bunch of American military choppers flying over Kelowna enroute to or from Alaska (can't remember), and feeling nervous. Being in the Ukraine right now is a scary prospect.
13 Russian Il-76, each capable of carrying 150 men, have landed in Simferopol airport. Looks like Russia has just landed enough planes to carry an entire airborne division into the Ukraine. Guess there was a reason the Russians hit the airports first. Link Link
Meanwhile back in Russia, local lawmakers are simplifying laws regarding the annexation of territory. Not really any other way of reading what's about to happen Link
Back in the US Obama says "There will be costs" to military intervention in Ukraine... but he's not going to tell you what. The US is looking more and more like a paper tiger. Without solid US and EU military backing, I think part of the Ukraine is screwed. Link

God I hope that we don't allow him to do whatever he wants.
I beg of you Obama to stand up to the treaty that you signed with Ukraine, I beg of you to stand for lady freedom and not allow Russia to do this.

What do you suggest he do? How far beyond the initial chest thumping would the American public be willing to engage a real army if it got to that?
The US public likes wars where it can kick someone's ass, and generally gets squeamish (rightfully so) when the bodies start piling up.
I don't honestly know, something better than "well, uh... we're not going to allow it" talk out of our elected officials. Maybe mobilize a bunch of people in the European bases, let him know that we will do something instead of just standing idle
I'm not in military, nor am I a military strategist, but I know we cant just sit and allow this to happen
