ISnt he a UFA? If so, then it doesnt matter and i would deal him asap for another asset. He isnt going to re-sign in Buffalo.

No a 1st wasn't imminent. Teams were extremely reluctant to trade 1st round picks in 2014. In fact the Blues willingness was why Bouw went there instead of Detroit, because the Wings weren't willing to move their 1st.

They still really don't have that franchise forward that nearly every team in the west has, but they likely do have the best defensive core and now a strong starter. So they'd probably be my favorites as well, but the race in the West is going to be a bloodbath. Imagine finishing in first and your reward in the first round is to face the LA Kings? Good luck with that!

No, somehow Edmonton will be in on the McDavid sweepstakes. I'd bet my kids' college funds on it.

I enjoy this trade a lot just for what it is, I want to see what happens with Halak before talking about who wins. If Buffalo re-signs him, just wow.
Woohoo, hopefully there is some good trade action between now and next week.

Obviously it was, because a 1st was given in both scenarios with the Blues.

Gotta be jealous of the youth Buffalo will have going forward:
2012:
2 x 1st round
1 x 2nd round
2013:
2 x 1st round
4 x 2nd round (including Carrier)
2014:
1 x 1st round
3 x 2nd round
2015:
3 x 1st round
3 x 2nd round
And they've still got Halak, Stewart, and Moulson, to trade over the next few days. So you can go ahead and likely add a few more 1st/2nd rounders.

If anybody is in a position to draft McDavid, they won't give up their spot for 5 first rounders, let alone 3. Buffalo may have a lot of shots at the board next draft, but there's only one pick that will really matter in the end..

Who'd want to play for that team?

Agreed, the Islanders are forced to defer the pick until 2015 even though they could be picking just as high next year in a deeper draft. It was a great trade for Buffalo just like this one with the Blues.

This trade sets the bar pretty high for what teams will be willing to pay for what I consider a small upgrade. Hugh overpayment imo, come on Burke, let's get some trading going!
Problem with Buffalo getting so many draft picks is that they will have a lot of guys hitting free agency at the same time, especially the 1sts.

A line of Morrow-Lapierre-Ott would be incredibly frustrating to play against for one game, imagine an entire series..

Is it just me or does anyone else think Miller is overrated? I think Halak is the better goalie. Good trade for both teams though.

Nope, I think he's overrated too. Truth is he had one great season and a great Olympics ... 4 years ago.

Likely to unload Moulson and Stewart now too for even more...

Posted in another thread, but wow....if you look at it, they essentially turned Chris Butler into 3 2nd round picks.

That's a massive return for Ott and Miller. The 2015 first puts Buffalo right into the lead for McDavid.
If the Stewart rumor is true and he does head to Ottawa, I wonder what that return will look like. Also, that takes them off of the Cammy radar as well.
