Ottawa desiring Stewart makes no sense to me.

Damnit Buffalo.
Currently they have the following draft picks in the next 2 years:
2014: 1 first, 3 2nds (MIN in Pominville trade, and LA in Regehr trade)
2015: 3 firsts (NYI assuming they defer, and this new STL pick), 3 2nds (NYI in Vanek trade, and LA in Regehr trade again).
Likely to unload Moulson and Stewart now too for even more...

I haven't looked but does St. Louis have a 2014 first? Did Buffalo just want to spread it around into more drafts or do they not like how shallow this years prospect pool is?

Also, Buffalo will probably not win another game this season.

This makes me a little jealous. Although the Flames didn't have more than 1 player going the other way, the return wasn't anywhere near the quality that Buffalo is getting.
Porier was imminent, but the other 2 weren't the greatest returns. I wouldn't mind a Stewart.

Halak is a pending UFA though, so they might as well move him now and then reevaluate their goaltending position in the off-season. Although I do agree with you that Enroth has not proven he's going to be a starter quite yet.

Makes sense for both teams. The Sabres need to rebuild and they get another 1st round pick. The Blues need to make some noise in the playoffs and they need to improve the team now.
With that said, I'm not sure if this is a good move for the Blues. They give up another 1st round pick. Are they really improved? For me, Ryan Miller has evolved into a Luongo type goaltender for me. He's still in his prime, but he hasn't really played at an elite level the past few years. Perhaps he's an upgrade over Halak and Elliott, but I don't think goaltending was the problem for the Blues the past couple of years. And what about Stewart for Ott? The Blues are getting a different player but Ott hasn't been in the playoffs in 7 years.
Overall, I think the Blues do get better but not a whole lot. Certainly not worth a 1st round pick IMO.

So you see the Isles finishing bottom 5 next year? If so they are better off giving Buffalo the 2014 pick. I don't think they'll be that bad but it could be two top 10 picks.
Also, no one knows what will happen with the Blues next year. They will likely be a cup contender but there is a chance injuries cause them to just miss the playoffs. It's a great risk to take for the Sabres. I wonder if St. Louis wanted it to be a 2014 pick but Buffalo insisted on it being 2015?

I like this trade for the Blues a lot, and love the trade for the Sabres. They are loaded up with great prospects, and tonnes of high round picks in the next few years.
God I wish Calgary could get in on that action.

So, is St. Louis already planning their Stanley Cup parade?

Yeah, but like I said, the 1st was imminent in either draft. The major factor is the piece coming back, and the Flames got nothing like Stewart.

What kind of message does it send to your team when you give up a top 5 pick this year just so you don't give up a top 5 pick next year.
Who'd want to play for that team?

What I don't understand is why the Blues didn't give the Sabres their first pick for this year? I guess Buffalo would only do the deal if the 2015 was involved, or maybe the Blues didn't want to trade their first rounder in back-to-back drafts, but I believe this is officially the first 2015 first rounder that has been moved.

Told that the Sabres will pay difference between Halak and Miller salaries, which is 1.75 mil.

Yea the 2014 draft is not good, so they must have specifically asked for next years pick then.
I don't blame them, they already have two 2nds this year, a late 1st is basically the same in this draft.
Horrible, horrrribble year to try and stock pile picks. Only an idiot would do that.

So Buffalo gets McDavid next year either with their own first or by packaging multiple firsts for him?
