It seems like a bad stereotype, that cheap tickets = bad customers, but unfortunately it's a reality.

One would think that it would be easier for security to spot people drinking up in the press level this season since it is basically a ghost town up there compared to years past. There are no lineups for the concessions, it is acutally kind of nice.

LOL - Metal detectors and purse searches are the norm at Joe Louis Arena.
I have been to 4 or 5 concerts at Budweiser Gardens in London (formerly JLC) and get patted down and searched every single time.

Never have I ever even considered using it as a weapon. You'd stand to probably cut your fingers and injure yourself worse, if you tried to stab someone with it.
|
But are your panties in a twist because you might have to leave it at home when you go to the dome?

It was more his "freeman on the land" attitude that bothered me.
That said, I can't say I've ever had an occasion in my life when I thought "I wish I was carrying a knife right now".

As advised in our earlier communications, to expedite the entry process, we encourage you to leave backpacks, large bags and metal objects at home or in your vehicle. These new measures may have some impact on entry times so, where possible, please plan to arrive at the venue a few minutes earlier.

Metal objects, such as keys?
This was in the STH email, appears to be slightly different from the PR on the website.

It is rude to answer with a question.
My answer is nope it does not. But I am happy to leave mine at home if those are the rules at the dome or I can carry it, get turned away or have it taken away.
How buddy got upset about this earlier is beyond me.

I look at it this way.
I carry the thing in the mall, movie theater, at work, to the pub, etc.... I do not see what the issue is. A swiss army knife is not a weapon. I could probably do more damage with my VW switchblade key, or a roll of quarters in my fist than with my pocket knife. So do we ban VW keys, and rolls of coins?
However, I have a 10" Ontario Raider SP10 Bowie Knife I take camping, that is big enough to chop down small trees, and yes, I can certainly see walking into the Dome with that strapped to my leg being an issue. That is a weapon.

These "rules" are set/made for the lowest common denominator (which I don't think you are), but I think you will agree there are a large number of mouth breathers that attend games. It is for these people that this rule was made, and I am fine with that.

My wife's purse is more like a small sport shoulder bag, and each game we have been to this year they've asked to have a look inside. Since we have a 2.5-year-old (not with us at the game though), she pulls out all sorts of exciting stuff: a fold-up potty seat, fruit snacks, pull-ups, toy cars, etc. Nothing has been confiscated yet.
As mentioned, I think that they're on the lookout for booze first and foremost, and to a lesser degree weapons.
Getting stuff into McMahon was a pastime back when I used to go more often. I have taken full Arby's combos inside in the pockets of a winter parka. An odd lady that was sitting near us once whipped out a fairly large jar of pickles and offered them around with a fork that she had also brought in. Weird. /cool story

You can still bring booze into the game with you, you just have to transport it in your stomach!

And when they demand you turn it over, you do so. With extreme prejudice.

I'm not really sure how to take this. Is it because the UK is not as "outdoorsy"?
Or is it a gag about how much knife crime there is in the UK?
