No no no. Don't you know that everyone just needs to go faster? All the time.

I feel like something that gets missed in these types of situations is that the guy who is doing the tailgating is being a dink too. I'm sorry, but if I'm going along Deerfoot at 120-125 in the left lane because I'm going faster than everyone in front of me and some d-bag that wants to go 140 comes ripping up behind me to drive 5 feet from my car, I'm not finding a place in the lane where I have to slow down to 90 (remember we have to merge too, it's not like that lane is always just open), just so you can keep on your merry way. In fact, I might slow down. If there's so much room in the next lane over, why don't you use it to go around me?

Brilliant, force him to pass you on the right, an even more dangerous move than the speeding.

I'm not forcing anyone to do anything. How is him passing on the right any different than me forcing me to merge to the right? Again, the lane is not always open and clear. If I'm doing 120 and there's a whole row of cars in the right lane doing 100, I'm not going to slow down (likely drawing more ire from said dbag),try and merge and be stuck behind cars doing 20-30 km slower than I was going just so you can have your fun going way faster than everyone for no reason. You can try doing that yourself, or wait until I deem it safe to move over myself. Until then, how about backing the #### off?

Hear hear!

If I'm doing 10-20 over the speed limit in the left lane, I'm doing my part. Any punk that rolls up behind me and decides to get cozy can see himself off the road for all I care.

I have to admit I am confused. I was just stating that it wasn't necessarily fair to assume that Firefly was getting tail-gated in the left lane. Firefly may have been getting tail-gated while they were driving in the right lane. As long as you're not going stupidly slow, shouldn't justify any ill-will from other users of that lane..

I know I was being facetious with my first line. The rest is general response to the thread.

MattyC, why don't you just lightly tab the brakes to p-off the d-bag behind you?

You're 100% right, if you truly can't move over. But when you can, do it. Not your job to control others speeds, move over safely, let him carry on and hopefully he gets pulled over.

Also a fun method. Usually I like to just go about my life and ignore the dbags. I find this leads to less stress on the road and in life.

I move over in those situations (guy behind me going quicker).

Why?

First, I think slower traffic should always move over. Do it safely, but do it.

Second, why on earth would I want to drive down a highway in front of someone who I know wants to go much faster than me? It's practically asking for trouble.

First, I'm not talking about the left lane. In fact, it mostly happens on a single lane road when I'm already over the speed limit and there is a line of cars I'm following. There's no need to be 5 feet off my bumper in ANY circumstance let alone one I cannot control as I am not the lead car.

Second, gravel doesn't have to be on the other side of any line. Often times I am in my own lane still.

Third, the OTHER driver is driving at an UNSAFE distance (you did read that part right?) so is the one that should be getting a ticket.

I suppose I could tap my brakes but have found that to be mostly unsuccessful here in the NE where drivers are oblivious and ######y.

OR, to the people who think you're going to prove something by tailgating, please put a stop to your aggressive, unsafe driving habits.

If we're talking about Deerfoot or Glenmore, the gravel accumulates on the left of the inside (fast) lane. Better to move over than start a road rage incident.

Its never a good idea to antagonize a random ahole out on the road. They will not be educated by your actions, they only get madder.

Really? So intentionally damaging someone else's property is the answer?

No they shouldn't be tailgating, but grow up.

Nothing but focus. Generally those who tailgate are experienced drivers in a rush with no consideration for others. There is a rule that says you have to follow at a safe distance. In fact, I believe statistics show that the majority of accidents are caused by people following at an unsafe distance and as such, I have every right to be worried by such actions in other drivers. I'm not doing it to be a vigilante; I'm doing it to drive defensively. I don't really want to be hit.

If someone is driving at a safe distance, they will be unaffected by my actions. It's really quite simple actually. I'm not doing it on Deerfoot or something. lol.

Intentionally damaging someone else's property? Hahahaha. It's a car. There are rocks on the road. This is what happens.

So what would you suggest is the best course of action to take when someone else is putting my health and well being at risk while tailgating? Ignore it?

Two wrongs don't make a right. Scared of tailgaters? Move over. Still feel the need to be aggressive about it? Brake check the moron (still don't recommend this). Still can't handle it? Take the bus.

Yeah, it's a car. It's also expensive. There's also people out their that love cars, just because you might not doesn't make them meaningless. If I found out the dick that sprayed my car did it on purpose, needless to say I wouldn't be very pleased.

Ignoring them is FAR safer than what you are doing.

How often does this happen to you? The number of times I get tailgated in a situation like you describe is maybe once per year; if that often. Even then- never as close as 5 feet away. Maybe a car length.

I would suggest that you slow down to create a gap between you and the car in front of you, this may encourage the tailgater to pass you and no longer will you be at risk...

Huge picture.
Spoiler!
