I don't think anyone is taking anything away from Team USA, who is probably the second best team at the Olympics; maybe third. The thing is, as this game pretty clearly showed, Canada is on another level.
This team is better than the Gold Medal team in Vancouver.

Not Canada's fault, but these tournaments are losing a lot of their attraction unless they become more competitive.
US didn't really stand a chance, once Canada turned it on in the 3rd, there was no contest.

trying to jinx it? been many close calls for canada in all those tourneys

Not really, no. Of course anything can happen in a one-off, but really unless Price let's in a couple of softies to make it interesting, I don't see Sunday being close in anything but the score (which will probably be low like today).
The only reason I give Sweden a chance is their strong PP.
|
And the 50 years before 2002 that Canada didn't win Gold? Or Canada not winning a world junior championship in the last 5 years? Canada has not won a IIHF World Championship since 2007.
I really feel like Canada winning is not as certain as you're making it out to be.

agreed, and I think it has a lot to do with the talk the last couple days about how great the US team is when they hadn't beat anyone of note except for a fluke job against Russia (Russia wasn't a great team either obviously)
I find it funny how people seem to just go with what the media says...the guys on TSN and Sportsnet tell us how the US has been the best team in the tourney and suddenly everyone thinks its a fact. Pounding terrible teams didn't convince me of anything

Mike Babcock deserves a lot of love for todays win as well. Flawlessly executed game plan. He is the master of devising game plans right now.

I think this game exemplifies why you want to build a team with great two way players, as opposed to offensively flashy ones.
Benn and Bergeron absolutely controlled things out there.

I honestly don't get why anyone could dislike Luongo outside of the team he plays for. He's probably become one of my favorite players in the league. Hopefully he wins a cup eventually... just not in Vancouver.
|
I would love nothing more than for the Canucks to trade Luongo for a bag of pucks...only to see him win a cup wherever he goes the next season.

Maybe. Haven't seen a ton of chemistry up front. The D is amazing, though -- no-one can touch the Canadian blueline (even with Bouwmeester, who IMHO has been just OK).
Anyway, Sweden will be a challenge because of goaltending. But a good physical game from Canada will give them the edge.
Question, and apologies if it's been asked: Has anyone seen a box score with TOI? Curious to see how many shifts St. Louis got -- didn't see him on the ice once.

So many players on that team to be proud of right now, just a great game all around. The US are a tough team and Canada handled them very well.
Very impressed with the selfless play we have seen from our mens team this year. There are no egos on that bench, they are all playing for the same goal.

OK, so St. Louis dressed and sat on the bench the whole game - 0:00 TOI? What was that?

There were times in the first where the U.S. was getting a lot of traffic in front of the net.
But Price was seeing the puck so well that you could tell from the first 3 or 4 shifts that he was really in the zone.
