A lot had to go right for for Canada to pull that off when you think about it. They were the second best team out there for 56 minutes.
But the hockey gods have a funny way of coming through when called upon. You saw it with 2011 canucks and countless other times. The Oilers every year after trying to tank. Etc.
The U.S. had it coming.

Is anyone surprised that the officiating was crappy? When was the last time any of us watched a women's hockey game with good reffing? As far as I'm concerned, ####ty reffing is just a part of the sport at this point.

Ironclad penalty shot.

Yup, when I first watched the replay I was looking for upper body contact and didn't pay attention to the feet. After watching again, you can clearly see the skates clipping.

Something like this could happen in any NHL playoff game.
|
Oh yeah it can happen, but it never does. Officials usually put the whistles away in sudden death situations, and you rarely see one penalty called let alone three. Who knows when the last time there was actually a 4 on 3 in the NHL playoffs. Just not a good way to decide games of this magnitude.

Yup, agreed. Though I was thinking the same thing that was posted, that the 4-3 might be the better bet anyway.

That was 4 and 12 years ago, respectively. The former was good-old fashioned trash talk, and the latter was a stupid decision already met by justice at least 3 times over.

yeah the Americans didn't seem too concerned about the reffing in that game.... that was ok I guess

But thats not up to the refs. I think the super-soft 'slashing' call was a make-up call for the super-soft 'cross-check' but the final call was pretty clear and they even deliberated.
Either way though, its a coin toss. 4-on-3 for 2 minutes or a penalty shot likely have equal probabilities of success at the end of the day. If that slashing call hadnt been made on the US they probably would have won.

americans seemed to be solid for about 57 minutes and then the craziness ensues....canda gets a fortunate goal off of a week shot that is deflected, then the lineswoamn boxes out the D and the shot on the empty net hits the post, then canada gets a feed in the slot courtesy of the goalie......canada takes and obvious penalty, then the us a dumb one and suddenly there was a ton of ice and haley gets knocked down from behind (i think she was out of gas and likely could not have skated much further) and then when everyone in the room is yelling shoot, Caanda makes one mroe pass to strike gold......gotta be tough for the americans to be within 180 seconds or less of thier goal and lose.......on the other hand, congrate the ladies for not giving up and continuing to push back......

Nope, not enough justice yet. How long did the curse of the bambino last in Boston? I'm thinking that for the American Women's Hockey team.
Never seen anything close to class out of them since Nagano.

Love the amateur vibe from all of this, seeing all the family members in the crowd, nice that these athletes have a stage like this at least every four years.

But the Americans would have started with a 4-on-3 and have it aken away.
4-on-3 is way easier to score than 5-on-4.
I have often argued that 4-on-3 is even easier to score than 5-on-3!

This game was almost decided by an empty-netter... This game was literally inches to an American gold...

I agree with the sportsmanship post you made, but beating the US never gets old.
