I'm no ice dancing judge, but that looked pretty flawless to me!

However, if the attitude is to push towards personal bests every time out, the results will start to come. Being disappointed in an athlete or team that has performed above their ranking, but perhaps misses out on gold due to a few mistakes, is not something I'm about to start doing. Would you be disappointed in the Swiss hockey team that 'lost' the World Championships this past year?
If we only push towards personal bests we will never catch the best in the world. We have to push to be the best in the world - if that is the overall goal. And, in my opinion, it should be. I think that if we change our mindset to push to be the best in the world, funding and better programs will develop to support that. If we are happy with personal bests, nothing will push the government and sport federations to provide better support for our athletes.

As for Switzerland - if they want to be a top/elite nation in hockey then they should be disappointed. To be satisfied with their finish means, to me, that they are happy not being the best. If they want to be the best, then they need to strive for more.

I don't think we should be satisfied with a performance when it wasn't the athlete's best. Plus, rankings are great - but you will never improve in rankings if you don't surprise sometimes and win when you shouldn't. Being ok with finishing at your ranking level seems to be akin to being ok staying ranked Top 10 forever.
Firstly, I definitely am not saying I am -happy- with their performance. I am saying I am glad they did better than they were expected to. Glad doesn't denote that I am running down the street with sparklers shouting their names.

As far as "they were in a position to medal" goes, yes, they were. They were .15 behind the team #1 in the world. Gaining .15 on the world #1 in the 4th run is actually a worse position to be than .30 behind after 1 run. So to me, having to chase the World's #1 for a medal, and having only been higher than 8th position twice in the entire season, I am allowed to feel proud of the fact that they were the best showing.

Where the real disappointment is, is in the teams expected to be better than Canada 3, such as Canada 1 and 2, who continually put up poor runs. The athletes that should do the best, doing the worst, is hugely disappointing, especially after what happened to Rush/Brown in 2010.

To me, disappointment is Charles Hamelin falling in his best distance. Disappointment in the Men's relay team falling in an event that we always medal in. Disappointment is winning a single medal in Men's Slopestyle. Disappointment is Patrick Chan winning a silver with an extremely poor performance.

To me, that's disappointment. But for me to be disappointed by Canada 3 putting up their 2nd best performance -ever-? Not the same emotional level of disappointment.

Phenomenal free skate from Virtue and Moir.

If they don't win gold it won't be because of them. Left it all out on the ice.

So Great Britain was beating Denmark 7-4 going into the 9th end, and Denmark scored 3. Then Denmark stole 1 in the 10th end, to beat Great Britain.

This actually sucks for Canada - it means we now have the harder semi-final, having to play Great Britain instead of Switzerland. Ugh. Having to play the #1 in the world in the semi's despite being 9-0 is not what you play the round robin for. But such is life!

No no 10:30am Sochi time. I don't think snowboard cross can be done at night.

Maybe we define disappointment differently in this context. It's not an emotional disappointment for me. It's a 'great but we can do better' disappointment.

I'm happy. I don't like playing switzerland in anything. Ott has won 2 silvers. Very experienced.

Eve has not played well this week. Some very weird shot choices. She's 4th for reason.

This I can get behind. I still think if you're pushing for, and achieving, personal bests, eventually you'll also be pushing for the top of the podium.

I think you're confusing the original start time with the rescheduled start time. If you follow the link I provided it says start time is 22:30.

Here's a link to the snowboard cross quarter-finals, which says it's start time is 22:56: http://www.sochi2014.com/en/snowboar...-quarterfinals

EDIT: NM I'm an idiot. I had the page converting to my time without realizing it. Go on about your business, nothing to see here...

But why wouldn't you push to be the best in the world? Instead of a personal best?

Because the best in the world are also improving - so to get to the top you need to improve faster than the best (and I think that's difficult when the best in the world is the best for a reason).
