The "why is there no straight pride parade" or "they should fly a straight pride flag" thing invariably comes up in any of these discussions and has always been a red herring.

First of all, why should LGBT groups have to wait for whatever other group, straights included, to have a parade, create a flag or go through whatever channels to have them flown?

Second, no one has ever stopped any such straight group from forming and holding a parade or creating a flag and flying it.

So, if you feel that there should be a straight group or a straight flag or a straight parade, go ahead and create it and no one will stop you.

There's a white pride parade/demonstration. It's allowed to happen in this city and is facilitated with a police presence to protect the participants.

Not necessarily, it depends how they follow up why they chose what they chose. Your responses are just blatant homophobic, bigoted reasons, though.

Well if you are going to give up that easily you'll never get anywhere in your crusade to fight AIDS in Africa or bring equal rights to the middle east.

I think this is probably a low estimate.

I've actually decide that the African aids flag will also be a rainbow. I'm gonna keep it simple and just piggy back off the success of the gay pride logo. So I guess I now do support the rainbow flag at city haul. Let's get that puppy up there and fly it with pride. Yipppeeee.

You're a goof.

Also, what the hell is this "city haul" that you keep referencing? Is it affiliated with Uhaul?

Rainbow flags actually have many different meanings across the world, but generally are based in the idea of diversity and inclusiveness.

I thought you were leaving? Don't say goodbye and then come back with a facetious comment. You just look petty.

Guys we are getting off topic. Let's get this thing moving in the right direction again. Clearly we all support the cause. We all want to see that rainbow flag for gay rights or African aids or whatever else we want it to represent up so let's support this, be vocal, and make it happen. Together we are better everyone, let's stick together on this.

True, but this is not the case in this instance.

People who don't like the message this sends should just keep it to themselves. No good will come from them voicing their opinion here, they get torn apart every time.

I'm fine with the flag ftr.

AIDS is losing it's battle against the human race, it needs a flag.

I voted that I support the flag, but I'd much rather see it flown permanently. To do it for a few weeks during the Olympics seems more like a shot at those backwards Russians than it does like real support for the gay community. A permanent flag would be a meaningful gesture in showing that Calgary is a city of inclusiveness rather than just patting ourselves on the back for being better than the Russians, when this thread and the Sun poll show that we still have a long way to go at home.

For ####s Sake, stop calling them Gay Rights. They are Human Rights, as in every human should have these rights.

Once again I have been put in my place. Undercoverbrother could not be more right. These are not just gay rights, these gay rights are much more then just gay rights, these gay rights are human rights. I will do my best to avoid calling them gay rights moving forward. Just to be clear, not gay rights, (thumbs up), got it.
