I was hoping it'd be really close to 100%, but hey, 75% is a lot better than that Sun poll which showed 85% of people didn't want the flag up there.
I honestly remember CP being a lot more progressive on issues pertaining to the LGBT community, like two years ago.
This thread and the Sochi thread from the FOI forum almost seem like a step back in time for this board.
Kind of odd.

I think you are confusing the issue of progressive thinking on CP with whether or not it is appropriate for the City of Calgary itself to make social statements using the flags at City Hall.
My concern before was that it seemed like a kneejerk reaction from someone based on what other cities were doing.
But as Bunk and others explained, that there is a process (similar to regular city permits) for the city hall flags, which seems totally reasonable to me.
Throughout this conversation, I felt the concern was with the process, not the cause.

I think a lot of people, not all here are finding reasons to be against this because of their own issues with LGBTs.

I support it as far as I don't think they should be removed just to placate people who are freaked out by homosexuals.
If others thought it was a good idea, it is an easy enough thing to tolerate. It doesn't effect me one bit.

Hrm....
The athletes have been told that they cannot have any political statements made during the games themselves, but that they cannot be punished for any comments or gestures made in the media after the events. So far nobody has taken advantage of the platform.

On the same day, Austria's veteran ski jumper, Daniela Iraschko-Stolz, said she would remain mute on the subject. I'll be pulling for Brockhoff on Sunday in the women's snowboard cross.... I hope SOMEBODY says SOMETHING. She was pretty much the only one brave enough to speak out pre-games, maybe she'll be the only one brave enough to speak out during the games.

I really don't care if city hall fly's the flags but there are far more severe injustices being committed throughout the world that I sure wish we would get behind beside this issue.

Sorry just voicing my opinion. I find it sad that people are putting so much focus on this issues while people in the millions are starving and dying of aids in Africa, or while Middle East cultures continue to treat females like animals. Yet we have to have constant garbage of rainbow flags and pride parades every weekend just shoved down our throats.
U know I'm starting to feel like people don't care enough about us straights. When is city hall gonna fly our flag?

So what are you doing to help the people starving and dying of AIDS, and the females treated like animals in the Middle East?
You are obviously passionate about these issues and you are doing something about it, so tell us: What are you doing? You might get some support.
The gay rights thing was started by regular people. That contentious flag was just put up there because someone in town asked them to. The whole movement has been pretty effective, to the point that it is annoying to people who have no problem with the gays at all! That's some serious influence! You could probably take a lesson or two in your crusade for whatever cause it is you are fighting for.
Also, I think the Pride Parade is just once a year.
Also also, what does the straight flag look like? As a straight, I'm embarrassed to admit I've never seen it.

No worries, you're an ill-informed, bigoted homophobe. There's millions of you left in the world, but the good news is lots of you are changing and the rest of you will die off.

I don't think there is a "straight flag" or "straight parades", because straight people don't feel the need to throw their lifestyles in everyone's faces, we just live our lives and carry on.

That's because we're not persecuted as straights, and don't have laws that treat us as second class citizens.
edited out the personal attack. Saved you the trouble JiriHrdina. Self moderation!!

Well you got me there -- we straights certainly don't put our sexuality out there for all to see.
If we did, there would probably be laws that give us special privileges, sex in advertising, something called "Hollywood", condemnation for homosexuals from our most influential religious and political figures, and naked women on the cover of Sports Illustrated. What a crazy world that would be!
Luckily we keep it to ourselves.

I find it rather intriguing that I'm ignorant simply because I choose to voice an opinion on this matter that goes against the grain. I support gay rights, I think it's wrong that they are treated poorly in certain areas of the world. But so are a lot of people and I don't have to deal with their flags on my city haul.....

So for you and all those supposedly tolerant people that don't want the flag up there, can you please explain what having "to deal with their flags on my city hall (haul lol) entails?
Like what are you "dealing" with while it is up there?

No, you're clearly a bigot. How can you support gay rights without supporting things done in support of gay rights? That post completely contradicts itself.
Have a little respect for everyone around you. If someone put up a flag in support of AIDS, are you going complain about that too?
