Also, have you ever tried to get a taxi driver near Khao San Road in Bangkok. Once they find out that you don't want to go to a ping pong show they usually remember that they can't take you where you want to go and then drop you off on the side of the road.
Worst cab experience I had was in Beijing - was there in 2001, We couldn't speak the language, so the station master handed him a business card that we had given him with the name of the hotel on it. The cab driver refused to take us initially, but the guy directing the cabs would have none of it.

He eventually agreed to take us. 30 minutes later he pulls to the side of the road and thinks he's done. Luckily my dad had a map with him, and we were able to point on a map to where to go and eventually had to point to make a fuss when he finally drove past our hotel.

Turns out he was actually illiterate and was just following the instructions of his boss, probably didn't want to him to find out.

I was once chased into a hotel in Cairo with the cab driver yelling Baksheesh!!! Baksheesh!! (Arabic for tip/bribe/charity). We knew we should tip but he agreed on a rate from the airport to the hotel and then denied everything and demanded more money. Eventually we negotiated a new slightly higher rate but we gave him exact change and he was pissed that he didn't get more. He tried to get the hotel employees to make us tip him and stood there yelling during our entire check-in.

People who complain all the time RGMG's. Literally, if people were just to live in Africa for a year, they would just stfu and be appreciative what they have, not what they don't have.

She's one of those people who have no inside voice.

This is mostly me. I'm sorry. It's the way I am, can't help it (except the laughs at own jokes and talks to self re: navigation).

I think it's high time the world agreed on a consistent way to write dates. Year, month, day. Hyphens? Slashes? I don't give a fuq. Just do it in that order, please.

No no no. Small to big - day/month/year is better.

Or just 05-Feb-2014 so it can never be ambiguous.

Or it should be Month/Day/Year
Because that's how 90% of the population actually say it.

I like to think that how Yoda would say it would be the most correct.

"5th of February 2014, today it is. Erm"

I travel a fair amount, and by far, Calgary taxi drivers are amongst the worst I see. They have pretty much zero knowledge of the city, and the ones who actually do have a GPS don't bother using it. Obviously, I don't expect them to know every inch of the city like the back of their hand, but when I get in a cab at the airport and get total blank stares when I say "Inglewood" and "Blackfoot Truck Stop", it really GMG. Not to mention, the road skills of the drivers of many taxis I've been in leave much to be desired. The ongoing joke with a few friends is that the taxi driver at the airport just got off a flight 15 minutes before I did, and walked out into a cab and drove down the terminal to pick me up.

Given the laughable state of livery administration by the city, expecting a knowledge test for drivers like some cities have (London, UK) is not a realistic solution. I've often been tempted to try and start a movement where passengers don't tip if they have to give the driver step by step instructions to find their house. But I'm fully aware that is a total dick move, so I've never done it.

It's gotten to the point where I'll rent a car at the airport and return to a DT location the next day to avoid Calgary cab drivers when I'm flying home. Or we'll leave our car at the airport on personal trips, despite the fact that a taxi might be $20 or $25 cheaper, and you don't have to drag luggage out to parkade 2.

I don't think it's any secret that our taxi industry is a joke for a city of over a million people. But it still RGMG.
I've been in cabs after a hard night of drinking where I.would have felt safe if I was the one behind the wheel.

I like this best. If you are not sure, then if one of the first couple of numbers is not nigher than 12, then you have no idea. That should never happen.

2-6-2014 could be Feb 6th or Jun 2nd.

Agreed. The number then letters for month then numbered year is easily the best layout.

yyyy-mm-dd is the ISO-8601 standard and was (I believe) adopted as the Y2K standard.

Biggest to smallest allows hours, minutes etc to be easily appended.

yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss

Last edited by Shawnski; 02-06-2014 at 08:36 AM. Reason: technically, hyphens are the ISO standard, not slashes

I think the short answer here is NO, we will not be synchronizing our date format because we will never agree.
The best we can hope for is to split into two camps and slowly disassociate with the opposing groups. Sure, at first there will probably be five different groups but war should take care of the smaller fringe groups. Eventually we will have two distinct societies with the superior society of Morlocks feeding off of the weaker Eloi.

mm/dd/yyyy is how it should be done.

As strombad said, that's how most everyone actually says it when they speak.

Which would be fine if it was: Feb-05-2014. Just take the numbers out for the month.
