Svens value is far higher to us, as a team who have put a lot of time into his development and drafted him; than it is to any other team in the league.
In short: we wont be trading him. Why would we?...

Sven is still a good prospect and has a lot of potential. He is not doing anything to make other teams lineup and ask for him in a deal, but if dangled he would still be a valuable commodity. He is likely viewed as a prospect that needs a change of scenery and a fresh start elsewhere. I would think he would be a guy that is included in a deal with one of the veterans to get a real good prospect on the verge of playing full time in the NHL, like a Larsson or Toffoli.
The big question is do you trade Baerstchi? I would be hesitant to trade him unless you were getting back a player that looks to be a core player for years to come. If you can get a big young right handed defenseman who has top four potential, or a natural RW with some jam and scoring tough, then I move him without even batting an eye lash. If it is less than that, I would be hesitant, only because of the risk involved.
A lot of Baertschi's problems are his own. This is not on the Flames at all, as they gave him enough opportunity and warning to right his ship. Baertschi has said believes he's the next star on the Flames and came in not willing to put in the work to prove that. He was afforded time on a line with Monahan and Hudler and did not produce or play to the level expected. He was then sent to the farm and has really done very little. You hope that a player who believes he's the next star on the team would go down and rip the AHL up. He's well behind players like Granlund, and that doesn't speak well for Baertschi. Next season is the make or break for him. He has to come to camp, practice and play hard, and then dominate in the AHL and hope for a call up. This expectation needs to be set for the young man, and if this is not the path Baertschi is prepared to follow it may be advantageous to move him while the team can.

To answer the actual question, if he was traded now, I would see him garnering slightly less than Neiderreiter did. So a roster filler + a 2nd round pick.

People forget Sven's value increased dramatically in the year after he was drafted and even as a 1st year pro. He was considered one of the best prospects in the game heading into this year and while that may have dropped off a bit his value is still very much there.

If you are another GM and look at tape on him this season and have scouted him in Abbotsford I imagine you aren't very impressed. He has value of course but he's not going to fetch a 1st round pick or top prospect unless it's another team's top prospect which has stalled in his development.
I have faith that Burke knows better than selling low so I don't think Baertschi being traded is something Flames fans should be worried about happening any time soon. He's probably going to have to tough it out in Abbotsford for this season and next in hopes he hits his stride over a full season or more in the AHL as it seems like he's not one of those players that deals well with being brought up and sent down.

One had hoped he'd be ripping up the AHL by now and finished the post Olympic season strong in Calgary.
As it stands, others are far more deserving that opportunity.
His value in trade is far less than his value to the organisation, so he goes no where... Including back up to the big club.

I think the fact Burke has called him out, shows he wants to keep him and see's his potential. Burke doesn't de-value his players only to trade them shortly after. Look at Kadri, he was really hard on him, and the fact there are rumors he wants to trade for him..... The fact Sven is on the 3rd line, shows they are strickly working on his defense. He won't learn that part of the game as much if he was playing on the top two lines. I think Ward was given direct instructions to get him up to speed on the defensive side. They know his value, they are trying to keep him from being Patrick Kane and one dimensional. Imagine if Kane was taught defense, he'd be in the category with the likes of Datsyuk and Hossa. This is good, and I don't feel Burke is looking to ship Sven out at all, he's trying to get the most out of him.

this is exactly how I feel, I think he is pushing him because he does have potential to be a good player. I have no issues with how he has been treated by Burke. This season he was just not getting it done it seemed and a season or two in AHL is not the end of the world. I hope he starts to excel, build his confidence and then start tearing it up in Abby. This might not happen until next month though. He is just not strong enough right now to play against men, he was pushed off the puck so easily at the start of this season. He needs to hit the gym and build that base to really excel at the NHL level.
Maybe lower value than a year ago but still a top prospect in our organization. It would be ludicrous to give up on him now. I would like to see us keep him until he is at least 25. It could take that long to develop him into the guy we want. He has great character and hockey IQ/skills, I can't think of guys with better attitudes than him (well it seems that way when he talks to the media).

I'd say it's right around five different threads all talking about the same thing.

Backlund is 24 and just starting to reach his potential. Patience with Sven. Let the coaches teach him how to be a pro. Let him mature. 3 more years.

People who are listing a 2011 draftee who's .4 PPG when in the NHL, is still on his ELC and is going through some growing pains as having no value are hilarious.

Everyone's expectations are way to high for him. Most players need 2-3 years in the minors to be able to crack an NHL line up. I honestly don't think he is that far off he just needs to work on his offensive game without it impacting his responsibility defensively.

Exactly how I feel. Bart is only 21. I'm more then willing to wait until he approaches his mid-20s before I even begin to expect him to contribute in a meaningful way. Anything earlier is just a bonus. But are fans going to be as patient? I don't think so. And that's a shame. There is a long list of European players that take longer to develop.

Thanks to some of you who actually read that and answered appropriately. I also don't blame Burke for Sven's play and where he is now but did I think it was a smart thing to devalue your top prospect publicly and expect to get much in terms of value for him later ? not really. Most prospects don't make it in all reality, but unfortunately, Burke has made it harder to ever use Sven as a valuable trade piece if he ever had to. IMO, you don't call out prospects or potential valuable prospects as thats just bad business and not smart. You try and hide your hand and make everyone else think you hold them in very high regard, hense, holding some value. It's not fricken rocket science. So now, even though he doesn't like Sven right now, he screwed himself of ever trading him for anything of value due to his big stupid yap. Catch 22 stupidity. Not that I'm opposed to keeping Sven and developing him, but, he was a valuable prospect/asset that had a very high stock value until Burke got there and now he is worth next to nothing. And who knows, maybe Sven might of come out that way anyways, but, I would of rathered another team figure that out after they had traded us something of value.
|
If Sven is evaluated "later", as you say, for a deal then I'm sure the value will be based on his play and what he's done. Not on what Burke said possibly months or even years earlier.
I think you kind of do blame Burke, though, hence your "awesome" comment in the original post.

To the rest of the NHL, I'm guessing he probably has similar trade value that Joe Colborne did the past summer? If that's the case, Flames should just keep him rather than trade him for a mid round pick.

One of the only ways I see Sven being traded right now is if we make a deal with the sabres at the draft and give something like our pick (maybe 3rd or 4th) + Sven for the first overall pick + lower prospect or something like that.
I don't see a reason to trade Sven now though. He isn't doing well and his value is low. Unless we're getting someone we value higher then Sven it's just not worth it.

I haven't seen him play but he is in a better place right now to learn the 200 ft game. I think he is in a better place right now to grow. He may have a slow start but the points will come (points in his last three). As for his value, he is still a high prospect.
Who in the draft would you have rather have drafted in the first round:

Even with hindsight he was a good pick.

I don't think we're as deep at LW as Toronto was at center. Joe had definite upside but with players like Bozak and Kadri along with others waiting their turn, he wasn't going to crack the Leafs lineup in a hurry.
I'm happy we only gave up a 4th. He's earned a regular spot and his play is showing flashes and bits of NHL calibre. Great chemistry with Moneyhands.

Colborne was cheap because he couldn't break the leafs lineup at the time and had to pass through waivers. They elected to get something instead of losing him for nothing. Sven still has another year left on his ELC.

he seems to be very similar development to Mikael Granlund who went from best player not in NHL at 19 to playing half an NHL season last year and hanging in as the #6 forward at age 22.
Nino Niederreiter is 21 and spent all of last year in the AHL. He is a bit different as he is bigger and does not have to play in the top-6 to be effective. He was not as bad in the AHL having 28 goal and 50 points in 74 games.
He was traded from the AHL for RFA Clutterbuck and #70 overall.
Baertshi is the same age as Niederreiter ( a year behind in development) smaller and this being his full AHL year after getting NHL time as 19-20 year old.
Maybe he will be able to catch up to Grandlund.
There probably are a lot of teams that would be willing to give a significant amount for him
I would have been totally okay with the Flames giving up either of their 2 later 1st round picks last year for either Granlund or Niederreiter.
Baertschi is still a better NHL prospect than Poirier and/or Klimchuck. He will be in the NHL (with some team) next year and it would be shocking if either of them get 10 NHL games.
