Mattress Question
So I'm casually looking at getting a new mattress.
Today after visiting a local furniture store I saw Surplus Furniture & Mattress Warehouse. Since I was driving by anyway I ducked in.
The sales staff was very aggressive, but since I wasn't buying and only looking I told them that straight up, if they wanted to waste their time talking to me they could fill their boots.
Anyway, I did stumble upon this:
http://www.surplusfurniture.com/en/s...-mattress-set/
it seemed comfortable and I like the pocket coil concept (although I don't know if I fully buy it).
The cost seems out of whack and I can't find a thing on the company Windham (Google keeps thinking I mean the hotel chain Wyndham). So I thought I'd turn to the collective CP Brain Trust.
A) What can you tell me about mattresses?
B) What can you tell me about this specific Windham Pocket Coil Mattress Set?

I don't know anything about it, but I would certainly consider the route of memory foam.

I've been in the market for a new mattress recently as well but I think I will opt for those 3 inch memory foam mattress covers. I figure it will add a couple more years to my existing mattress until I can shell out the $1000+ for a new one.

Just throwing this out there, if anyone has or is familiar with the following:
Sealy ''Malta'' Tight Top Sleep Set
wholeHome style factory (TM/MC) Kirk' Tight-Top Sleep Set
wholeHome style factory (TM/MC) Banstock Sleep Set
Sealy 'Dariane' Tight-Top Foam Sleep Set
Sears seems to have them priced well.

FWIW.....I spent a couple of years (casually, like you) looking for a new mattress before finally pulling the trigger. It's been a few years since I actually bought one but my thoughts from the experience:
- There is a definite 'lifespan' difference between a $300 mattress and a $1000+ mattress. My previous purchase (a cheap-o 'hotel quality' mattress for $300 or $400) only held up for a few years.
- Don't pay more than 50% of the retail value. It may take several store visits over a period of time, but you will eventually find a bazillion dollar mattress for relatively cheap. My current mattress retailed around $1200 but I paid under $500 (The Brick Mattress Store, FWIW).
- Just go for it, don't over think it. Looking back, spending all that time sleeping on a crappy mattress while looking for the perfect replacement was foolish. My current mattress only met (let's say) 80% of my criteria, but its been terrific overall and certainly worth the money.
- Buy a mattress without the fancy pillow top. It's easy to add a quality pillow top for a decent price afterwards.
tldr; Get into the $750+ retail bracket, stick with a brand name (Sealy, Serta, Simmons), and buy one that has a huge (50%+) retail price cut (may take a couple of store visits to find).

I believe your bed is the most important piece of furniture in your house. Even though your sleeping... its where you spend the most time and should be considered accordingly. You shouldn't have to spend fortune as there are often half price deals to be found, but you do get what you pay for, as in anything. My wife found ours half price (still $1200 bucks) at Sears Home, I think, but worth every penny. Just my 2 cents.

Don't ever buy your mattress from a cheapo mattress place. They assemble them there and you would be disgusted with the quality of stuff they use. I used to work at one here in London called Mattress Depot and they were terrible. Bugs in the mattresses and they would assemble the box mattress structure with half broken warped slats.

I bought one a little over a year ago and I'll just say that in my experience actual brand name and model means very little. In fact many brand have different models depending on the store you go to, so it's hard to compare.
The best thing to do is just get to the store and try out every one you are interested in. Don't be shy, really roll around on it. Wait for a few sales and make your move.

We went with Sleep Country because of their return policy, though I don't remember what it was, we were spending good money and wanted to not wake up with a sore back every morning. We just got it in the fall and it is awesome for us. It is a Sealy or a Serta pillow top that doesnt have any springs or what ever. The wife just went to bed so I wont go tearong the sheets of to check what it is for sure. We mad three different trips to the store and narrowed it down a little bit each time. I seriously put more into buying this mattres then buying our last two vehicles.
Anyways make sure you can take it home and sleep on it for a few weeks and still reutrn or exchange it if its not what you like.

My wife and I went out on Boxing day like 5 years ago. We went to the Sears Furniture and Mattress store and did not intend to buy a mattress, we had just gone to look.
We walked in the store and were given a 25% off everything coupon and walked over to the matresses. We saw a $3500 matress and then saw that it was 50% off. We tried it out and really liked it, so in the end we got the $3500 mattress for around $1300, and it is just as new and comfy as the day we bought it.
Price definintely has to do with Quality in regards to a new mattress. But as one poster said above, do not pay anything higher than 50% of the sticker value, they are always going on sale, all you have to do is wait.
We had purchased a $500 one a year before that and within a year we were looking for a new mattress as we were both laying on the boxsprings basically.

I have a fairly simple philosophy... our lives are divided into 3 parts, mostly. Work, Home life and sleeping. Hopefully you can enjoy all three... by far the easiest of the three to ensure you enjoy is the Sleep. Buy a good mattress. It took me years to find the Intellibed and I tried a few before it... Completely worth it. Hands down best purchase I've ever made. I’m sure there are other good mattresses, I can’t speak to that…. My intelibed is all I know and beats anything I have ever owned.
Enjoy your sleep and play in bed and your work and home life are bound to be more enjoyable... it’s kind of the base of the pyramid.
If you are sleeping on a ratty, cheap mattress your kind of failing your life a little bit.

So very true. A good nights rest is so important, spending the money on a good mattress is a solid strategy.
Sadly, I fell into the buy what feels decent at the time. We bought a King Bed frame that form Ikea that had their Sultan Mattress on. Felt unreal at the store but when we got it home and set up, it didn't seem quite as comfortable as at the store. I was coming off a Futon mattress so basically everything felt better.
But the one thing that really made it good was a couple of years ago, my parents bought as a memory foam pillow top.
Oh my God....
I'll be the first to admit it takes a bit of getting used too but man, these things are money. Perfectly molds to your body each time you get on top of it. It still trips me out a bit jumping onto it at night and feeling myself sink in.
I'd be very interested to see how a full on memory foam mattress is like in comparison. I sometimes worry we are spoiling ourselves when we have to sleep on a different bed.

Hahaha, ain't that the truth... I find all sorts of reason to not sleep at friends or my folks place if I don't have to. When work makes me travel all I think is dammit... hotel beds...
Friend: Want to come out and party at my house, you can crash on my couch.
Me: umm... ugghhhh.... I uggh Can't... I umm I hate you.
I'm no good thinking on my feet. :P

I've never slept on one. What happens if you are a tosser? Do these only work if you stay still when you sleep?

Actually I think the sign of a "tosser" - assuming not the british slang - is a bad mattress.
Having a great mattress should reduce your tossing. Also with the memory foam because you sink in its harder to toss.

I have a memory foam pillow, and it changes shape as you move.

Not at all. You'd sink into the new position within seconds. Although I would imagine you are tossing around a lot because your current mattres is too uncomfortable? You sound like you are very much in need of at least a new mattress better suited for you.
I don't think I've ever been much of a tosser but I do know that with the old mattress we had, I usually woke up with a sore back, haven't had that since.
And ya, those memory foam pillows are the bomb too. We got ours at Sleep Country I think? Around $100 which I know sounds like a lot but they are the exact same shape and thickness as when we bought them over 2 yrs ago. We probably would have gone through 3 or 4 of the cheap ones by now.
Where you sleep is one place you really should spend some money.
If I had to say one bad thing about memory foam, not great for sex....
