Advice on beds
I guess the time has come and I'm debating a Tempurpedic mattress. Anyone have one and would you buy again? I have a terrible back and am trying to deal with that...so a new bed is going to happen here, its a question of what kind. I went to a few shops today and layed on a variety. I have no idea. It seems like a lot of the "deals" are basically the same and buying a bed because its on sale isn't how I want to make this purchase. I don want a good bed though, so I won't be buying the bargain basement model, but beyond that I don't know.
Any advice or considerations would be great. I'm buying a king, and that's about all I know for sure at this point.

I'll never buy a non-foam mattress again. They are way more comfortable and way more hygienic.
We got ours from Costco.ca for about $700, king sized. Way cheaper than the mattress store ripoffs.

Box spring as well, or didn't need it?
Did you buy the one they ship to you? I was considering Costco actually...

I got a latex bed which breathes better than the foam ones do. Tried a foam bed, but my spouse round it too hard, and you could smell the foam. So far the latex bed seems to work for me who wanted a firmer mattress and for my wife who preferred softer.

Nothing to add, except avoid The Brick because they are absolute garbage to deal with and fail miserably when it comes to anything customer service related

no box spring. it sits on slats that we got from Ikea (along with the bed frame).
Yes, they weren't available in store. I think it was $120 off when we got it... (just looked up the receipt in my email account - It was $130 off, down to $600).
No dust mites and soooo comfortable.

It always struck me as being strange that people think nothing of spending several tens of thousands on a vehicle that they spend an hour a day in, whereas when it comes to mattresses, that they spend 8 hours a day on, they often spend a bare minimum.
We have always stuck with the Simmons mattresses. Their pocked coil technology, with individually wrapped springs, maximizes comfort and is best for motion separation. Sears often have them on for half price at various times of the year.

If you want the best mattress....one that's made out of all natural materials like horse hair and sheeps wool, one that is guaranteed for life, and will make everything else feel like you're sleeping on an air-mattress...and are willing to spend the price of a small compact car for it, then look into a Vi-Spring.
My wife used to work at a place that sold these things so Ive give them a bit of a test-drive...holy crap are they good.

Just go lay on a few mattresses until you find one that is comfortable to you.

We bought a Tempurpedic on the advise of our Chiro/Sports medicine guy. He said don't buy the knock-offs, get the Tempurpedic brand. I have not been disappointed, I've been having great sleep for the past two years with no back pain. Our particular one sits on top of a box-spring type structure, but is quite thick.

Went to a foam store in the NE (Sureline I think it's called? a couple blocks away from the Cactus club on Barlow). There are countless online bed forums dedicated to matching bed materials to ailments. I custom ordered a blend of latex and memory foam with a higher density foam under my arse on my side of the bed due to my lumbar spine issues. Cost was a bit higher than an off the shelf foam bed, but I'm year 6 with no complaints. What's cost when you spend 8 hours a day on this thing?

I need to get a new mattress as well. I've been having extreme sciatica pain and after staying on some firmer mattresses over the holidays with little pain, I've come to the conclusion that my mattress could be contributing to my lower back/sciatica pain.

Simmons no longer holds an exclusive patent on the "pocket coil" and nearly all manufacturers now have some kind of pocket coil mattress in their lineup.

I'm on day three of intelibed, and really impressed. Expensive little suckers, but we kept our last mattress about 5 years too long, and that taught us to not cheap out.

We went with a Sealy hybrid mattress. It has a coil spring base, and a memory foam top.
I wanted to keep some of the "spring" of a traditional mattress, so it was perfect for us. We've had it for about a month, and It's been worth every penny so far. No morning back pain, tossing and turning is greatly reduced, etc.

Sorry, can't comment on Tempurpedic specifically (which I know was the reason for this thread) - I tried one out in the store but moved on fairly quickly from it.
HOWEVER...
I just bought a new bed in the summer from Sleep Country. It's a queen-sized pocket coil mattress from a smaller brand that, according to the salesperson, "doesn't spend a ton of money on their marketing budget, so it's good quality at a good price".
That sounded kind of gimmicky to me at first, but it's been a very comfortable bed. Would highly recommend the pocket coil, both for isolating movement and also for comfort.

Mrs. B and I just went through a bed buying decision. It seemed the more we learned about beds the further from a decision we were since there is so much conflicting opinion on what a 'good' bed is.
I am of the belief that "you get what you pay for" doesn't always apply to mattresses. My folks bought a $3000 mattress a few years ago and have hated it ever since. Some of the top-ranked foam mattresses on Amazon.com are less than $400.
In the end we bought an Ikea pocket-coil mattress and a foundation for a total of $600, thinking that if it doesn't work for us we can use their exchange policy (best not to think about what happens to exchanged mattresses!) or replace it since we haven't sunk a lot of money into it. It's only been a week but so far so good.
To the OP, if you're thinking about Temperpedic (memory-foam) specifically, perhaps check out Amazon and look into a high-ranked memory-foam mattress for a lot less $$$. Temperpedic was the first memory foam mattress but I think now a lot of other companies are making good ones and now you're just paying a lot of money for the Temperpedic name.

I've heard that sex isn't as good on the memory foam mattresses.
