So does great mean a chance to win a cup or does it mean staying in Calgary?

I think Cammalleri would be a good veteran to keep for the kids. Hopefully the terms and dollars make sense though. Maybe 3 years for $18 if he's okay without a raise? I don't think he'll get more than that as. UFA would he?

I'd much rather have 1st round pick + prospect + $6 million that we need to spend in UFA or through trade than keeping Cammalleri.

If the Flames sign Cammalleri it is more than likely going to be an offer he cant refuse.
The Flames have money they need to spend and Cammalleri doesnt have to stay.
I fully expect that if Cammalleri re-signs in Calgary its going to be something like 1 or 2 years for somewhere $8M AAV.
And then they'll trade him at the deadline next season or something.

I hope the discussion was as follows:
Burke: "We want to trade you at the deadline and then sign you in the offseason to a 4 year $4.5 million per contract to mentor our kids during the rebuild"
Cammalleri: "great"

I think he'll be looking for his last contract so I would guess in the $35-$40M range (total)
It might still be $6M a year but 3 years won't get it done. IMO

I don't think he gets a raise to be honest
Maybe during UFA season but not if he re-signs with the Flames.
I don't think he has done anything to warrant a raise

Never said he did, but the Flames obviously want to keep him and are way, way off the Cap Floor, thats why I said 'money they need to spend.'
And they want to keep him under contract so that hes more valuable to trade later on and the Flames might swallow some of his salary in any trade to ramp his value up even more.

I like Cammy. Wouldn't hate to have him stay here.
But I like Gaudreau more, and feel we need to accommodate him. And on a Burke team there can't be both a Cammy and a Gaudreau in the top 6. Something has to give.
You can't say we need to get bigger and more skilled, then just go and re-sign our smallest and most valuable asset for acquiring future skill. Just does not make sense.

Wasn't it already rumoured/reported that is he wants to stay in Calgary it would be less per year and the offer on the table is for less than his current salary?

Well just by living in Alberta he effectively gets a raise of like 10% just because of the tax differences.

All the rumbling to date has been the exact opposite
It sounds like the Flames are offering a lower number than he (and most) think(s) he would get on the street

What doesn't make sense is making roster decisions based around Johnny Gaudreau. He may or may not even play in the NHL. He might decide to stay on another year at BC. He could need a year or two in the AHL to adjust to an 82 game schedule, and playing against bigger/faster/stronger players. There are way too many unknowns with any of our prospects to factor them into decisions about the current roster.

No to Cammalleri.
You can not have your LW looking like:
Cammalleri 5'8''
Baertschi 5'10''
Gaudreau 5'7''
If Cammalleri gets signed, I would take that as meaning 1 or both of Gaudreau/Baertschi being traded soon. And given the current state of this team, that would be a shame.

We have coaches and other veterans for mentoring. Cammalleri would be stealing a roster spot, as the Fonz just mentioned, from one of our talented prospects. He is declining and IMO it's time to move on.

Add in Hudler as one of the top 6 RW'ers, and you have a big problem. That would probably the the smallest and softest top 6 in the NHL. Even the Oilers might have their way with us physically.

It isnt the same.
We're not up against the cap and he isnt 'stealing' anyone's spot. If you want a team full of children with little to no direction then look 3 hours north and see if you like it.
I think Cammalleri is really good for this team's progression back towards competition and how much they pay him is actually kind of irrelevant.
My ideal scenario is that Cammy stays until we can get something really good for him. And again, in the meantime, who really cares how much he gets paid.

I have to think he will be traded. Cammi knows the situation in Calgary is a rebuild, and that's not changing anytime soon. He is going to get his money with a rebuild team or not. If he wants to stay, i don't think there is much else to think about, and he would have already re-signed.

Please don't bring the Oilers into this. They are just a bad org top to bottom.
I'm not sure why Cammaller is good for our progression. I see an underperforming, undersized sniper who plays a position we have depth at, who asked for a trade in the summer, and who can probably get us a decent return at the deadline.
How much you pay a player is always relevant. Just because we have cap space now doesn't mean we won't be kicking ourselves in 3 years if we signed some plug UFA like a Boyd Gordon to a 3.75/year AAV contract (sorry for bringing up the Oilers again)
