Comparable contracts:
Andrew Cogliano - 4yr-$12m
Joel Ward - 4yr-12m
Victor Stralberg - 4yr-12m
Nick Foligno -3yr, 9.25m
Daniel Zubrus - 3yr, 9.3m
Jarret Stoll - 3yr, 9.75m
Paul Gaustad -4yr, 13m
Rich Peverely - 3yr, $9.75m
Seems about right when you look at that list.

I'd take them all over Stajan, especially Peverley. Gaustad is an equal signing.

Is paying Stajan 3.1 million on a cap floor team preventing the team from throwing money at a free agent?
You are making the sounds a baby makes.

Peverley has really gone in the tank of late. 18 pts in 47 games last year, 23 pts in 48 games this year. Much better on the faceoff though.

I already said it isn't. You've already said he's a "warm body" which, if they could find a better UFA, would mean he's wasting a spot being paid that. Someone could play better for only a million dollars more. Money doesn't matter anyway, with the cap floor. Is that a completely invalid argument? If so, i'll admit I was wrong

Stajan's 17 points in 41 games is near on-par. You're paying for the faceoffs with a guy like Peverley, but they matter.

Maybe this has been said already but you got to give Stajan some props. He could've easily signed with another team in the summer (probably for less $$ mind you) but he decided to re-sign with a rebuilding team who will likely not be competitive until the last, or 2nd last year of his deal if we're lucky. He wants to stay here, he wants to be a mentor for the young guys, and stick with the team while it is a bottom feeder. That's the type of character guy I want around the young guys as we rebuild.

This seems like a "we need players" signing where you re-sign a guy who you know would give you average production and fill a role rather than overpaying to replace him. Not really sure I like this signing. I thought Stajan was one of the guys Burke identified in Toronto as a player who has been in a losing environment for too long. This year will be Stajan's 9th consecutive season in which he has missed the playoffs. Approaching ultimate loser category.

He'll be the shi--est player on that list.
Heck, he'd probably be the worst out of the top 80.
Hopefully the low ball contract makes him attractive when the cap goes up. He's soft in every way that matters - mentally and physically.
Which would be ok if he at least scored like Reichel or Huselius... but he doesn't.

Player - OK
Money - OK
Term is too long, 2 years would have been better, even at a premium (we have cap). Shelter Monahan, play hard minutes, do some mentoring and then traded for a pick or re-signed.

No argument. I have always had a soft spot for stajan as he is the only one remaining from the Neuf trade. You can tell he tries but right when he gets hot he gets injured. He will be a good mentor for some of our future flames plus it seems he wants to stay here.
I think stajan at peak is a 30-40 point defensive third line centre. Keep throwing him to the wolfs while we try to get our younger players easier minutes to develop.
He definitely is better to keep then trade for a 4th round puck.

Woah, this thread got long quick.
I was actually a supporter of keeping Stajan around for the rebuild for his character, and I'm still on that boat somewhat.
But
I just feel like there must be someone better suited to fill a need for now, somewhere out there, available for the kind of money we can throw around. Mainly someone bigger/more physical.
Then again, Cammalleri is not going to be here next season, and probably not Stempniak or Galiardi either, so that's a good number of open spots.

How is it a waste? A waste of what? This centre depth is good enough for dead last in the league. Calgary could sign 3 more of the guys you listed with the cap they have and still not make the playoffs.
How on earth is Stajan being on the team holding anyone back? He is the #1 centre by default.
More pressing though is who the fark wants to play in Calgary for rebuild years 2-4 that is both an upgrade on Stajan while simultaneously suffering because of his presense?

A bit taken aback that everyone's so against the Flames re-signing one of two bonafide NHL centers on their roster.

The idea is that you rebuild with players you can win with. I lean towards this myself. I don't like the idea of having players who are merely stopgaps and are on the team simply because the team is rebuilding. It's the reason why there are franchises who keep missing the playoffs. They build their team with players who accept losing. Stajan is one such player. Stajan is used to losing and he has accepted it. Stajan has long considered to be a player who is only good on a nonplayoff team. That means he's a guy that is decently productive on a nonplayoff team but he's not a guy you can win with so he's a player you have to get rid of before the team can contend.
